Sharib Hashmi today he holds fast to his wife Nasreen While Hashmi is fighting cancer once more after a sixth recital. Despite the emotional and financial challenges the family faces, the actress says she’s trying to stay hopeful. “I’m trying to keep my mind in a positive frame, otherwise it’s going to be really hard for me to deal with it. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully he is responding positively. My wife is a great fighter and seeing her spirit gives us hope too. But it is a long journey as the cancer has spread throughout the body,” says Sharib Hashmi.Nasreen was first diagnosed with oral cancer in August 2018 and has since undergone five surgeries to remove the tumors. Although he was in remission after his last operation in September 2024, the disease returned earlier this year. Recalling how the outbreak was discovered, Sharib says, “Unhe do-dhai mahine se khaansi chal rahi thi and at that time, everyone was coughing because of poor AQI. So we thought that might be why. We also did an x-ray, and there was no problem. But in the middle of February, he got a blister in his mouth, and we immediately went to the doctor who asked us to do a biopsy and a PET scan. And in that, a new diagnosis was made.”It also revealed that while the cancer was previously confined to the mouth, it has now spread to multiple organs, including the lungs, bones and areas near the heart and liver. Nasreen is undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy under the care of the same doctor recommended by actress Tannishtha Chatterjee. Because the cancer has spread so far, surgery is not an option at this time.Sharib also opened up about the enormous financial burden of treatment. “Main zyada se zyada samay uske saath bitata hun par mujhe paise bhi kamane hain because now the expenses are huge. I need more work so that I can pay my wife’s medical bills as even my insurance cannot cover the amount this treatment costs,” he says. The actor has admitted that, at the moment, his priority is not the quality of the projects, but getting enough work to manage the expenses. “Right now I can’t say no to work, last year didn’t go well for me financially either, and this year has started on this account. I’m looking for more and more work, so I don’t have to think about the cost of the treatment my wife needs. We’re considering target therapy after the current treatment regimen, and it will be very expensive.” I hope I can pay for it myself,” he says.Talking about how their children are dealing with the situation, Sharib shared that both he and Nasreen sat down with them to explain everything honestly. “We both explained the situation to the children together. Our son is a little older and understands the seriousness of the situation, but because of this cancer, I feel that they both matured before their time. They have seen our fight since 2018, so they would also be affected, but many things do not even think about our situation.”“For now, the actor says he’s focusing on staying emotionally strong and optimistic while hoping his wife gets through this difficult phase and makes a good recovery.
