The Jharkhand government has launched an aggressive initiative to expand quality public education across the state. Chief Minister Hemant Soren On Tuesday, he directed the authorities to speed up the plan to increase the number of CM Schools of Excellence to 5,000. The initiative aims to provide better education facilities to children from disadvantaged and poor families who are often beyond the reach of expensive private schools. The announcement came during a review meeting of the School Education and Literacy Department, where the chief minister urged the authorities to speed up the long-pending education reforms. According to media reports, the message from the government was clear, the state wants to restore confidence in government schools and improve educational conditions for millions of students.
The government targets private school level education in government institutions.
At present there are 80 operational CM Schools of Excellence in Jharkhand. These schools were started to provide modern infrastructure, better classrooms, better teaching quality and quality education as compared to private institutions. The state government now plans to expand this model on a larger scale. Raising this number from 80 to 5,000 marks is one of the most ambitious education expansion drives in recent years in the state.Officials told the Chief Minister that the schools have shown encouraging academic results. According to the government, the students studying in these institutions are not only improving in the academic field but also performing better in other activities.
No school should be run by one teacher, Chief Minister
According to media reports, one of the strictest directives issued during the meeting was related to the shortage of teachers in government schools. The Chief Minister directed the officials to ensure that no school in the state functions with only one teacher within the next six to eight months. The issue of single-teacher schools is a serious concern in rural and tribal areas, where students often suffer due to staff shortages and irregular teaching. This direction signals the government’s attempt to address one of the biggest structural problems affecting school education in Jharkhand. For years, many schools in remote areas have struggled with poor teacher availability, poor infrastructure, and poor student attendance. Education experts have repeatedly warned that without enough teachers, improving learning outcomes becomes nearly impossible.
Focus is on dropout students and child labour.
The government has also stepped up efforts to get children back to school. Officials told the Chief Minister that the dropout rate in primary and secondary education has come down. The School Education Department is currently conducting a special campaign to identify and re-enrol drop-out students.Special attention is being given to children engaged in labor and informal work. The state government said that in collaboration with the labor department, such children are being identified so that they can be brought back into the education system. The campaign reflects a greater concern in economically disadvantaged areas, where many children drop out of school early due to poverty, migration, or the need to support family income.
An advanced educational mission
The expansion of CM Schools of Excellence is emerging as a major political and social project for the Jharkhand government. The administration appears to place education reform as a central pillar of governance, particularly in districts with poor access to quality schooling. However, experts believe that the real challenge will lie in implementation. Building thousands of schools, recruiting enough teachers, reducing dropout rates, and maintaining quality standards will require sustained funding and administrative oversight. For now, the government has made its intentions clear, it wants public schools in Jharkhand to become strong enough to compete with private institutions and open doors to quality education for students from the most vulnerable backgrounds.
