The film remains dated for November 10, 2027, but the team is now looking for a new lead star and other cast members. No reason has been given for Momoa’s exit from Arrowhead Game Studios’ sci-fi action project based on the popular shooter-style game franchise.

According to Variety, Momoa’s casting in ‘Helldivers’ was announced in February. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, who are backing the film, are now looking for a replacement and the rest of the cast.The game follows an “elite unit of soldiers” known as “Helldivers”. They face alien creatures that threaten to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth. More plot details of the film are yet to be shared.Justin Lin is directing the adaptation. Hutch Parker is producing with Asad Qizilbash. Lin is also producing through Perfect Storm Entertainment.
‘Helldivers’ adaptation continues
The film comes as video game adaptations continue to garner a lot of interest from studios and audiences alike. The 2022 film ‘Uncharted’, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, earned $407 million worldwide. Other game-based titles tied to the same big screen include Peacock’s ‘Twisted Metal’ series and HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’.‘Helldivers’ was released in 2015 by Arrowhead Game Studios. A sequel ‘Helldivers 2’ followed in 2024. The property has enough material for future films if the first film does well.Momoa still has several projects lined up after leaving ‘Helldivers’. His list includes ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’, the follow-up to the hit ‘Minecraft’, along with the animated hybrid ‘Animal Friends’, ‘Fast Forever’ and ‘Protecting Jared’.He will also appear in major films in the franchise this year. Momoa will star in ‘Street Fighter’ as Blanka, described in the material as “Blanka the wild brute”. Duncan will also return as Idaho in ‘Dune: Part 3’ and play Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter, in ‘Supergirl’.The casting search is now the next step for ‘Helldivers’ as the film moves towards a 2027 release.
