Salim Khan married Helen when he was already married to Salma Khan (Sushila Charak) and had four children. Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Alvira Khan. Hence, it created a lot of buzz in the industry. Today, however, the whole family is quite close. While Helen has a close bond with Salma, she commands immense respect from all of Salim Khan’s children, who treat her like a mother. In an earlier interview, Helen revealed that when she first started dating the veteran screenwriter, she was going to hide from his first wife. Helen and Salim Khan first crossed paths in 1963 on the sets of Kabli Khan, where Helen played the lead and Salim appeared as the villain. At the time, he didn’t pay much attention to it. A few years later, in 1966, while watching ‘Teesri Manzil’, he noticed her.In an interview with Arbaaz Khan on The Invincibles, Helen opened up about the initial phase of their relationship and shared how Salim’s first wife, Salma, would avoid seeing him respectfully. He recalled: “In the beginning, what I used to do was, you know, go past Bandstand, and sometimes I’d recognize mummy [Salma] he’s on the balcony, I’d go down so he wouldn’t see me and think the car would be empty next to your house. I held so much respect.”Helen reflected on how her bond with Salim grew after he was offered a role in a film. He spoke sweetly about Salma, acknowledging the emotional difficulty of the situation and stressing that he never wanted to break up the family. He said: “He (Salim) gave me a role in a film. We became friends, mum was very nice, it must have been hard for your mum, she must have been going through a lot at that time. I think fate brought me closer to all of you, and I have you to thank. I never wanted separation from the family for Salim.”At a time when Salim was still establishing himself in the industry, Helen was already a star. Their professional collaborations gradually developed into a deeper bond. Speaking to Pinkvilla in a previous interview, Salim admitted that he couldn’t pinpoint when his feelings for Helen developed, but over time, they chose to name their relationship despite labeling it as an affair. “I won’t be able to say exactly when I fell in love or decided to marry him. After seeing each other for quite some time we decided to honor our relationship. We got married in 1980,” he said.
