Gujarat Titans, who struggled at the start of IPL 2026, are on course to qualify for the playoffs. GT has 8 wins in 12 matches, 16 points and an improved Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.551.In the first phase of IPL 2026, they won just three of their first seven matches while losing four, and even started their campaign with a loss against Punjab Kings. But then came the real change. After the defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Gujarat Titans never looked back and have now won four matches in a row.The team’s success in the second half is fueled by three major factors for Gujarat Titans:
Opening Pair: Shubman Gill and Sai. Sudharsan
The opening pair of Shibman Gul and Sai Sudharsan has once again been the standout act of GT. Captain Shubman Gill anchored the batting unit by scoring 467 runs including four fifties. Acting as a reliable explosive partner, Sudharsan sits alongside Gill in the race for the Orange Cap with 501 runs. The opening pairing has gone unnoticed amid the fast-explosive partnerships of other teams, but the team’s cornerstone is built on long partnerships, which other teams lack. Sai Sudharsan and Shibman Gill have so far scored 535 runs in 11 innings which is the second most. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who scored 627 runs in 12 innings. He showed consistency in his batting, often building innings for the team rather than departing during the power play. Last season, GT made it to the playoffs, where they lost to Mumbai Indians in the eliminator. During that season, the duo put on 912 runs in 15 innings, the highest partnership in the 2025 season, where Sai Sudharsan ended his campaign as the Orange Cap holder.Again, the pair form the backbone of the team, often leading the run chart in almost every outing.
Jason Holder’s involvement
Jason Holder has emerged as a turnaround masterstroke for Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2026, continuing their rise to the top of the points table. After being acquired in the IPL 2026 mega auction for Rs 7 crore, he was benched during the first leg of the season. But when GT brought him in to replace Glenn Phillips, he turned the season around, helping the franchise win 5 of 6 games after he joined. Although his batting contributions have been limited, he has dominated with the ball in hand. In 6 matches so far, he has taken 13 wickets with an economy rate of 6.35, best among bowlers who have bowled 20 overs or more this season, averaging just 10.92. Holder decimated the SRH lower middle order with 3 wickets for 20 runs in his 4 overs. His cutters and silver balls bowled out SRH for just 86 runs. In the previous match against PBKS, Holder tore through the batting line-up posting his best figures of the season with 4/24 in 4 overs. Holder also showed his exceptional all-round value, adding three quick catches to his tally of two wickets for 29 and a quiet 12* to seal a four-wicket win.Standing at 6’7, Holder used his height effectively to extract extra bounce, pairing seamlessly with Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Siraj to dominate the death overs.
The lethal bowling powerhouse of Gujarat Titans
In a season where the bowlers are often falling apart for runs and struggling with line and length on batting pitches, GT’s bowlers have dominated unlike any other side after a difficult start to the campaign. The GT bowlers came back strongly, especially in the powerplay, decimating the opposition batting line-up early. GT’s five-man frontline bowling corps took an astonishing 95 combined wickets in 12 league matches, strangling the opposition and restricting teams to less than 200 in 8 of their first 11 matches. GT topped the IPL 2026 Powerplay charts with 25 wickets, followed by RCB with 22 wickets and SRH with 21 wickets. They have been using an aggressive blueprint with premier pacers Mohammad Siraj and Kagiso Rabada for 3 consecutive overs each.Rabada currently leads the race for the Purple Cap with 21 wickets. He has destroyed the top order by taking 16 wickets in the first six overs alone. Acting as Rabada’s partner-in-crime, Siraj took 13 wickets with key early breakthroughs. He has also bowled a tournament-high four maiden overs this season. Rashid Khan had a rough start to the season where he leaked runs despite taking 1 or 2 wickets, but he has returned to form and now leads Gujarat’s spin department with 16 wickets. They consistently dismantled the batting line-up in the middle overs. Holder, meanwhile, has become the tactical linchpin of the XI. Since breaking into the line-up, the veteran West Indian has picked up wickets in both the middle and death overs, maintaining a defensive economy rate of 6.35.Prasad Krishna took 14 wickets in just eight matches and kept the pressure on the batsmen with his disciplined line and length, scoring crucial breakthroughs whenever required.
Still a lean patch for the GT?
While Gujarat Titans are at the top of the IPL 2026 points table, their middle order (positions 4 to 7) has endured a tough phase. The core group working in the middle overs has struggled to build momentum. Washington SundarRahul Teotia, Glenn Phillips and Shah Rukh Khan formed GT’s middle order in the first half, but GT later brought on Holder in place of Phillips, while Nishant Sindhu has played the last two matches in place of Shah Rukh Khan, who has scored just 35 runs this season. The Washington Suns were also a concern early on, but have regained momentum after a lean run of scores. He played a brilliant 50-run knock against SRH in the previous match after the early dismissals of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, forming a crucial partnership with Sai Sudharsan to guide GT to 168.Overall, the team has shown grit and teamwork throughout the season. While the top-order and bowling unit have become the cornerstone of the team, the addition of Jason Holder has added even more strength to the Gujarat Titans line-up.
