A new extended look at the live-action adaptation of the 2016 animated hit ‘Moana’ has been unveiled. According to Deadline, during an appearance on stage in Las Vegas, Johnson said that “Maui is very real” to the Polynesian people and that it has been an “amazing experience” to live with the character for more than 10 years. He said the character embodies “what real masculinity looks like,” with men protecting and defending women, and noted that he channeled his beloved grandfather in the role.

Explaining his desire to bring a live-action version of the property to life, Johnson said, “There’s something special and important about it. [when] you take the animation in live action. We’re able to show our Pacific Island, real people, and it’s both humbling and inspiring.”

Set in ancient Polynesia, Moana follows a village chief’s daughter who chooses the ocean to reclaim Te Fiti’s heart and save her people, embarking on a journey across the Pacific with the demigod Maui.
