How Demi Moore’s Grandson Inspired ‘Groundswell’
“I look at that and say, ‘What am I doing today to leave our planet better for my grandchildren and my grandchildren’s children?'” Moore told the outlet. “What we do today, at every level, creates what our future will be like. I think our planet is clearly crying and hurting.”Moore first heard about the filmmakers’ work on a river rafting trip in the Grand Canyon with the film’s producer. He was moved by the solution-oriented and hopeful approach, describing it as the kind of storytelling he wanted to be a part of.
What is ‘Groundswell’
‘Groundswell’ is the third film in a trilogy by husband-and-wife filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell, following 2020’s ‘Kiss the Ground’ and 2023’s ‘Common Ground’. The couple traveled the world to communities where regenerative agriculture has had a positive impact on the climate, from Uganda to India to Brazil. The ultimate goal of the film is to support the management of the transition to regeneration of billions of hectares of agricultural land worldwide.Moore narrates along with the documentary Woody Harrelsonhis ‘Indecent Proposal’ co-star, who has acted as narrator in all three films of the trilogy and is also the executive producer of ‘Groundswell’. “I really know how committed and passionate Woody has been about this issue,” Moore said. “We share three grown daughters, and I think you feel a greater responsibility as parents to do everything you can to protect this beautiful planet.“The film also includes Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Donald Glover and Rosario Dawson among its participants.
Behind the scenes of Demi Moore’s role
Moore played an important role in developing the script and at the end of the film she explains how becoming a grandmother deepened her commitment to the environment. Described by director Josh Tickell as a “spectacular” storyteller, he remembered how he agonized over going back to the studio to re-record a line he wasn’t satisfied with. “He had the commitment, we said, ‘let’s go back'”, he recalled. “So we turned on the lights, everyone came back, we set up the microphone, and we did it until it was right.”‘Groundswell’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month, and Moore also served as a member of the jury. “I can’t tell you the excitement that everything lined up. We couldn’t have asked for a better platform to release this movie,” he said of the timing.Moore’s next personal step on her sustainability journey was simple, planting her own little garden at home. “The more we seek to create that change, coming from a more gentle, kind, loving, compassionate place within ourselves, then it spreads to our surroundings, our environment as well,” he said. “I really see it as part of the answer to creating a healing within ourselves and within the earth.“‘Groundswell’ can be broadcast from June 5.
