Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed all government schools to conduct remedial classes for students of classes IX, X, and XII during summer vacations, with an aim to strengthen academic performance and close the learning gap ahead of the new academic term, reports ANI.In a circular issued by the school branch of the Directorate of Education on May 8, the department said that the summer vacation in government schools will continue from May 11 to June 30. Special remedial sessions for students of classes 9, 10 and 12 will be held from May 11 to May 23, excluding Sundays.The move comes at a time when schools are under increasing pressure to improve their performance in board exams and reduce academic weaknesses among students who need extra support.
Focus on science and math.
According to the circular, remedial classes for class IX and X will mainly focus on science and mathematics subjects. However, school heads are given the flexibility to add additional subjects depending on academic needs, analysis of results and availability of teachers.For Class XII students, remedial teaching subjects will be decided by the concerned Head of School (HoS) based on the needs and academic preferences of the students.The classes aim to reinforce key concepts and improve overall learning outcomes, the directorate said.
Class timings and structure
Treatment sessions will run for three periods per day. Classes for students will be held from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, while teachers will be on duty from 7:20 am to 11:00 am.Each period will be of one hour duration. In double-shift schools, classes will be organized in separate wings to avoid operational disruptions.The schedule issued by the Directorate is as follows:
- First round: 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM
- Second round: 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM
- Third period: 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Uniform mandatory, attendance to be marked online.
The directorate has also made it mandatory for students to attend remedial classes in appropriate school uniform. Schools are directed to maintain online attendance records of all participating students.In another important directive, parental consent in the form of No Object Certificate (NOC) will be mandatory for students attending these summer classes.Heads of schools have also been asked to prepare revised class timetables and submit them to the concerned Deputy Director Education (Zone) before the commencement of summer vacations.
Schools were asked to identify needy students.
The circular further emphasized that “special attention” should be given to needy students who need academic reinforcement.Schools are also directed to inform students and parents through all available means of communication to ensure participation and awareness.The decision signals the Delhi government’s ongoing push to improve basic education and board-level preparation in government schools, especially for students struggling in core subjects.(with input from ANI)
