The difference between the two teams is stark – PBKS have won five of their six, one of which ended in a draw, and are top of the table. DC, meanwhile, finished sixth in points tally, with three wins and the most losses.
What makes Punjab so strong is the stability in their lineup. Shreyas Iyer’s side have used just 12 players throughout the season – the fewest personnel used by any team – and this consistency in selection has translated directly into character definition.
Their batting unit has been the best of the ten teams – their overall run-rate chart stands at 11.3, they are the joint-best scorers in the powerplay (11.3) and are the best at scoring runs in the middle overs (11 runs per over). He hit 69 sixes – the second most by any team in the tournament – and did not let the opposition bowlers sit down.
Their openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhasmaran Singh have been the backbone of this dominance. Delhi-based Arya has 211 runs at a strike rate of 248 and his powerplay numbers are equally unreal: 152 runs at a strike rate of 258. Prabhasmaran has matched him almost exactly – 211 runs at an average of 52.8, with a strike rate of 187 against pace.
As an opening pair, Arya and Prabhasmaran have continued the good work in IPL 2025 – they have scored 197 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 221. The Australian batting all-rounder has scored 223 runs at an average of 55.8 and, importantly, has shown a tendency to falter early before hitting the pace.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer is in good form scoring three fifties and returns to familiar ground – having previously captained Delhi Capitals, including a runner-up finish in the 2020 season. Iyer is all set to play an IPL game in New Delhi for the first time since 2019 and will be keen to treat the crowd to a great show with his willow.
PBKS bowling has been about them performing collectively rather than a one-man effort. Arsdeep Singh, wicketless in his first three matches, has found his rhythm and confidence and has taken six wickets in the last three games. Marco Johnson, Xavier Bartlett and Vaishak Vijaykumar have performed well, while leg-spinner Yuzvinder Chahal has been a major threat for them in the middle overs.
In short, PBKS are firing on all cylinders and to derail their winning juggernaut, DC must find a way to bridge the gap between individual brilliance and collective action. If Arya and Prabhasmaran continue at their usual clip, DC will need their bowlers to pick up early wickets – something that hasn’t happened consistently.
DC’s run-rate of 8.7 in the first six overs with the bat is the third-lowest in the competition, and the onus will be on openers Patham Nissanka and KL Rahul to meet that target, especially if they are to successfully chase anything above 200.
In addition to that, DC has changed their batting order in almost every game and constantly changing their impact player selections means they haven’t zeroed in on a set total. David Miller was outstanding in the death overs despite falling for a wicket in the last game, Tristan Stubbs, despite adapting his game to the conditions very well, needs to overcome his slow start.
With the ball, Akshar and Kuldeep Yadav need to be at their best together – something that hasn’t happened enough. Against SRH, they curiously bowled just two overs, even as part-time off-spinner Nitish Rana bowled four overs and leaked 55 runs.
Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan have been among the most economical bowlers in the 17-20 overs this season and are DC’s best hope to suppress the late innings on PBKS’ strong batting line-up. For now, another win for PBKS would see them maintain their perfect start to the IPL season, while a loss for DC would put them at risk of falling further behind in the tight race for the playoffs.
