OSLO: Playing chess battles and taking risks on the board “is part of de Gokash’s identity”, his coach Grzygorz Gajewski said in an interview to TOI. “It’s a very difficult place to be in. He is under the spotlight and we are doing everything in our power to get back to the top level. The Polish GM, who also worked with V Anand, explained why the 20-year-old world chess champion could not change his approach and accept caution. “But then again, that approach is what made him a world champion in the first place. He really needed to do a lot of things to get that (world title). So I can’t really blame that approach.” Prague Magnus Carlsen and his coach Peter Hein Nielsen are just three of the many who have criticized Gokesh’s game recently.Gajewski hoped that the world championship title two years ago was not Gokesh’s peak. “He has a lot of weaknesses and when he was winning the title he had the same weaknesses as now. Maybe more. But there was so much confidence then.”
