Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings are in uncharted territory after missing the playoffs for the third straight season. For a franchise that was once seen as a regular top 4 side, the decline has been overwhelming and uncomfortable.Despite an uneventful campaign, CSK remained mathematically alive till their last league game against Gujarat Titans. They needed a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, but instead suffered the biggest defeat in their IPL history – hammered by 89 runs in Ahmedabad. The loss not only ended their season but summed it up: fragile bowling, inconsistent batting and a side that never truly settled.Having made 10 consecutive playoffs, CSK have now missed out on qualifying five times in the last seven seasons. The only silver lining is that, having qualified twice during this phase, they managed to win the title. But that statistic alone can’t mask the bigger concern — the franchise that once defined consistency is now looking for direction. In CSK IPL 2026: Six wins in 14 gamesSeven wins is generally seen as the minimum requirement for an IPL playoff spot, and CSK are short of that number. They finished with just six wins and 12 points in 14 matches.Their home form, once their greatest strength, failed to save them, while their away form never really materialized. Four wins at Chepauk and just two away wins were never enough in a tight season. Their loss to Gujarat Titans in the last league game only highlighted how far they have fallen from the team that will lift the trophy in 2023.

Key reasons behind CSK’s struggle in IPL 2026
1. Injuries derailed the season. The biggest reason for CSK’s downfall was injuries. Almost every phase of the season was marred by fitness breakdowns, which caused constant changes to the playing XI and prevented any momentum from building.MS Dhoni Missed the entire season with a calf strain, missing both experience and leadership in pressure moments. Jamie OvertonCSK’s best overseas player this season, suffered a thigh injury during the business end and returned to the UK. Young opener Ayush Mahatre, one of the breakout performers of the campaign, also suffered a hamstring tear after just six matches. The problems did not stop there. Ramakrishna Ghosh was ruled out after one match with a fractured foot, Khalil Ahmed suffered a quadriceps tear earlier in the tournament, while Nathan Ellis was ruled out for the season with a recurring hamstring problem. The result was a constantly changing side with little stability. CSK were forced to rely heavily on inexperienced players and makeshift combinations, which rarely allowed teams to survive long IPL seasons.2. Overseas cover never clicked.CSK’s overseas collection also failed to deliver consistently. Apart from Jamie Overton and, to a lesser extent, Noor Ahmed, the foreign unit never managed to make a mark on the tournament.Overton was one of the few positives of the season, contributing 14 wickets and valuable lower-order runs before injury curtailed his campaign. Noor Ahmed took 13 wickets, but lacked consistent dominance during crucial stages. The biggest problem was the failure of remaining overseas investments. DeWald Brews struggled badly despite long support, Matt Short never quite settled in, while Spencer Johnson failed to provide the expected impact after replacing Nathan Ellis.CSK kept changing the foreign combination throughout the tournament. But the constant changes only reflected a larger problem – there was no fixed overseas center around which the side could build.3. Season without rhythmNothing sums up CSK’s season better than the timing of their defeat. They started the campaign with three consecutive defeats and ended it with three consecutive defeats. There was a brief mid-season revival when CSK won three matches to briefly revive playoff hopes. But every time the pace looked within reach, another blow struck. Injuries, inconsistent performances and random combinations pushed them back time and time again.Unlike CSK’s peak years, where there was rarely a stir, the 2026 version seemed to be constantly reacting to the situation rather than controlling it.

IPL 2026: CSK Report Card
1. Best actorDespite the disappointing campaign, a few players gave CSK genuine reasons to be optimistic.Sanju SamsonIn his first season with the franchise, the batting became a pillar of the team. He scored 477 runs at a strike rate of over 165 and scored two centuries, often leading the batting line-up at difficult times.Youngsters Karthik Sharma and Ayush Mahatre also impressed. Mahatre, in particular, stood out with fearless strokeplay and a strike rate touching 178 in limited opportunities. With the ball, Anshul Kamboj emerged as CSK’s most reliable wicket-taker, taking 21 wickets in what has been a tough season for the bowlers. Although he faded a bit toward the end, the youngster showed enough promise to be a long-term asset.Equally valuable was Jamie Overton’s contribution before injury. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball gave CSK the balance they lacked for most of the season.Top Batsmen:
| Matches | runs | Ave. | SR | 100/50 | |
| Sanju Samson | 14 | 477 | 43.36 | 165.62 | 2/1 |
| Karthik Sharma | 11 | 295 | 32.78 | 136.57 | 0/2 |
| Ayush Mahatre | 6 | 201 | 33.50 | 177.87 | 0/2 |
Top Bowlers:
| Matches | Wickets | Ave. | Econ | The best | |
| Anshul Kamboj | 14 | 21 | 25.23 | 10.52 | 3/22 |
| Jamie Overton | 10 | 14 | 17.78 | 8.89 | 4/18 |
2. Conflicting actorsCSK’s campaign was largely defined by players who showed flashes of brilliance but failed to make an impact.Captain Rituraj Gaikwad endured a difficult season. He scored 337 runs but never looked in complete control of the top order. His strike rate of 123.44 reflects CSK’s major batting problem – lack of urgency during pressure situations.Shivam Dubey (270 runs in 13 games) played a number of aggressive cameos and maintained a healthy strike rate (158.82), but the absence of defining match-winning innings hurt the team.Among the bowlers, Noor Ahmed (13 wickets in 14 games) and Akil Hussain (8 wickets in 7 games) had occasional strong spells but could not consistently dominate the surfaces where CSK traditionally relied heavily on spin. Hossain’s mid-season blunder further upset the side’s balance.Mukesh Chaudhary (8 wickets in 8 matches) also had moments with the new ball, but inconsistency prevented him from being a reliable option.3. Total failuresSeveral players failed to justify either their opportunities or the roles assigned to them, exposing flaws in squad construction and back-up planning.Gurjapaneet Singh (4 wickets in 8 matches), Khalil Ahmed (2 wickets in 5 matches) and Spencer Johnson (2 wickets in 3 games) struggled badly with both wickets and economy rate, leaving CSK without a pace attack for most of the season. Batting frustrations were equally damaging. Dewald-Brews (151 runs in 11 games) never found a rhythm despite supporting the expansion with an average below 19. Sarfraz Khan (161 runs in 8 games) and Arul Patel (129 runs in 7 games) made isolated cameos but failed to convert the starts into effective innings. While Arrol scored at a strike rate of over 200, his inconsistency made him unreliable in pressure situations. Prashant Vir (90 runs in 6 games) also failed to establish himself in limited opportunities.

What’s next for CSK?
- Does CSK need a tactical reset?
After three consecutive league stage exits, CSK clearly needs a strategy overhaul ahead of IPL 2027.Over the years, the franchise has built its success around stability, experienced players and maximizing the conditions in Chepak. But in 2026, this formula stopped working permanently. Their spin-heavy approach no longer guaranteed control at home, while constant changes due to injuries prevented rhythm from developing.Modern IPL teams are increasingly being built around aggressive batting depth and adaptive pace attacks – two areas where CSK appeared behind the curve. Outside of Anshul Kamboj, they lacked a reliable wicket-taker, while the batting often struggled to accelerate under pressure. The franchise now faces a stark choice: continue to rely on the old formula or take a younger, more flexible approach.
- Can Gaikwad lead the next era?
Rutoraj Gaikwad’s third season as captain was not smooth as he failed to lead the team to the playoffs in all three. Injuries, Dhoni’s absence and constant reshuffle made leadership extremely difficult. There are also questions about his tactical flexibility and batting intent. A return of 337 runs at a strike rate of 123.44 lacked the authority expected of a modern IPL captain.CSK though will continue to look to Gaikwad as the face of change in the post-Dhoni era. The biggest challenge will be whether he can evolve into a more active leader capable of carving out a new identity for the side. The emergence of young players like Ayush Mahatre, Karthik Sharma and Anshul Kamboj at least gives CSK a base.
- How can CSK become a contender again?
For CSK to become real contenders again before the 2028 mega auction, IPL 2027 must be approached with long-term clarity rather than short-term fixes.Their top priority should be rebuilding the pace attack around Anshul Kamboj and finding durable foreign pacers after repeated injuries to Nathan Ellis and Jamie Overton. They also need more middle-order firepower and reliable finishers, as much of the responsibility has fallen on Sanju Samson this season.2026 provide a positive starting point. Mahatre, Karthik Sharma and Kamboj showed that the squad already has the next generation. The challenge now is to build a stable core around them instead of relying heavily on aging experience.
