After months of uncertainty over the tournament’s Indian broadcast rights, Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) has secured the media rights for both the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups, ending FIFA’s long search for a broadcaster in one of its biggest global markets. The agreement covers not only the men’s World Cups in 2026 and 2030, but also a wider package of 39 FIFA events until 2034, including the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The deal marks Zee’s return to major sports broadcasting nearly a decade after it exited the sector by selling Ten Sports to Sony Pictures Networks India for $385 million. For Indian viewers, the announcement answers the most important question: where to watch football’s biggest tournament, whether on television, mobile phones, laptops, smart TVs or DTH platforms.
How to Stream FIFA World Cup 2026 Online in India
Fans who want to watch the matches digitally will be able to stream every game through the Zee5 app and website. Zee has positioned the tournament as part of a broader strategy to expand its sports streaming business and increase paid subscribers to its premium subscription offering. Currently, the platform offers two related plans: Zee5 All Access + Sports (3 Months)
- ₹799 (₹266/month)
- Ad supported
- Covers the entire duration of the World Cup from June 11 to July 19.
Zee5 Premium Annual Plan
- ₹1,699 per year (₹142/month)
- Includes 4K Ultra HD streaming.
- Dolby Atmos audio support
- Stream to up to four devices simultaneously
- Access to Zee5’s extensive premium entertainment catalog
Although Zee has not announced a FIFA World Cup-specific pass, industry observers believe that a tournament-specific package could still be introduced closer to kick-off. However, there is no official confirmation of this yet. Before purchasing a standalone subscription, viewers may also want to check existing telecom and broadband plans. Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and aggregator platforms like OTTplay and Tata Play Binge often bundle Zee5 Premium access with select plans, potentially helping to reduce or eliminate additional subscription costs altogether. So many customers can get better value.
How to watch FIFA World Cup 2026 on TV
Viewers who prefer traditional television broadcasts will be able to watch the matches through Zee’s newly launched Unite8 Sports network. As several group stage fixtures are expected to be held simultaneously, coverage is likely to be split across the network’s four channels, with separate English and Hindi feeds to help accommodate simultaneous matches throughout the tournament. After receiving the necessary approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), the broadcaster officially activated four sports channels:
- Unite 8 Sports 1
- Unite8 Sports 1 HD
- Unite 8 Sports 2
- Unite8 Sports 2 HD
Following approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), the channels have gone live on over 500 cable and distribution platforms across the country. Distribution partners include Dish TV, Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Sun Direct, Citi Networks, Indian Cable Net Company Limited, Hinduja Global, Fastway, Andhra Pradesh State Fiber Net Limited (APSFL), Kerala Communicators Cable Limited (KCCL), Thamizhaga Cable TV Communications, VK Digital, UCN Cable Network, Tech One, Srisai Cable, Kal Cable, Digyana, Bhimavaram and Exom, among others. Since multiple World Cup matches will be held simultaneously during the group stage, Zee is expected to split the coverage into two channel feeds, ensuring that viewers can access parallel fixtures.
Unite8 Sports Channel Prices
Accordingly Zee’s Referral Interconnect Offer (RIO) Published earlier this year, the monthly channel prices are:
- Unite8 Sports 1 — ₹7
- Unite8 Sports 1 HD — ₹9
- Unite8 Sports 2 — ₹8
- Unite8 Sports 2 HD — ₹11
(All prices are exclusive of applicable taxes.)While the channels are now available on major DTH and cable platforms, package details and channel placements are being updated by individual operators. With simultaneous World Cup matches expected to be split into different feeds, viewers following each game may need access to both Unite8 Sports channels. Hence the final cost will depend on the package offered by each operator, despite Zee already publishing its basic channel prices.
Why did FIFA’s India deal take so long?
The agreement is the result of nearly 10 months of negotiations between FIFA and Indian broadcasters. FIFA initially requested around $100 million for the 2026 and 2030 World Cup rights package before later lowering expectations to around $60 million, industry sources said. Previous broadcaster JioStar reportedly submitted bids well below FIFA’s price, with one offer believed to be around $20 million and subsequent discussions reportedly narrowing down to around $15 million for the 2026 tournament only. Sony, which previously held the Indian World Cup rights for the 2014 and 2018 editions, held talks but ultimately did not submit a bid. While neither FIFA nor Zee disclosed official financial terms, industry estimates put the final deal at more than $40 million, with a large portion of the cost believed to be linked to the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco. For comparison, Viacom18 paid around $61-62 million for the rights to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
A big challenge for Indian viewers
Even with broadcast arrangements finally settled, the tournament presents a significant scheduling challenge. Since the 2026 World Cup will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico, most of the matches will be played in time zones that are much less favorable to Indian viewers than Qatar 2022. Only 14 of the tournament’s 104 matches are expected to start before midnight in India. The final, scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey, will begin at 7:00 PM GMT, which translates to July 20 at around 12:30 AM IST. Amazing compared to previous tournaments. About 98.4 percent of the matches in the 2018 World Cup and 82.5 percent of the matches in the 2022 World Cup started before midnight for Indian viewers. Late-night scheduling was one of the main reasons why broadcasters approached the rights auction more cautiously than in previous cycles.
What Zee Says About the Launch
Speaking after the launch of the new sports network, Bavesh Janavlekar, Chief Business Officer, Unite8 Sports at Zee Entertainment Enterprises said: “With Unite8 Sports, we have created a curated, multi-sports offering that reflects the evolving preferences of the Indian audience, and creates a scalable platform that can meet the growing demand for high-quality, accessible live sports action across the country. Our focus is on ensuring seamless access for viewers, supported by strong partnerships across the distribution ecosystem. We are ready to feature upcoming FIFA events across all our channels, and we are well positioned to provide a great viewing experience to fans across the nation.“
The bottom line
For the first time since Qatar 2022, Indian football fans now know exactly where they will be watching the FIFA World Cup. Each of the 104 matches of the tournament will be available through Zee’s ecosystem, either through live streaming on Zee5 or the newly launched Unite8 Sports television channels. The biggest challenge may not be finding matches, it’s staying awake to watch them.
