Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Receives ‘R’ Rating Ahead of July 17th Release |

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' has received an 'R' rating ahead of its July 17 release

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’ has officially received an ‘R’ rating from the Motion Picture Association.According to recent reports, the rating would technically require viewers under the age of 17 to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to attend screenings in the United States. According to Variety, this rating will limit the audience for what will be one of the biggest films of 2026.

“The Odyssey” earns an R rating

The rating makes ‘The Odyssey’ one of the few recent blockbusters to break the $1 billion mark, despite its ‘adult’ rating. However, it is not the first time that Nolan has received this assessment. The Oscar-winning film “Oppenheimer” also crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office despite being R-rated. The film also went on to become one of the most successful R-rated films in cinematic history. While the exact reasons for the certification are still unknown, the mythological film is expected to feature some large-scale battles and intense violence.

Fans watch ‘The Odyssey’ in different formats

As the film’s release approaches, the makers on Friday rolled out a promotional campaign allowing users to compare how footage from the film appears in various formats. The tool shows the differences between IMAX 70mm, digital IMAX, traditional 35mm presentations and Dolby Vision projections. This feature has generated a lot of discussion among moviegoers online, especially fans eager to experience Nolan’s preferred IMAX 70mm presentation.

‘Odyssey’ budget

Universal Pictures, which collaborated with Nolan on “Oppenheimer,” is distributing the film, which has a production budget of about $250 million. If accurate, this budget would place the film among the most expensive R-rated productions of all time, surpassing recent releases such as Joker: Folie à Deux and Deadpool & Wolverine.

The ‘Odyssey’ plot

Based on Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey” follows the Greek king Odysseus on his journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures, vengeful gods and various dangers along the way.

‘The Odyssey’ cast and release date

Set for release on July 17, 2026, the film has an all-star cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Jon Bernthal.
