‘Ginny Wedss Sunny 2’ actress Avinash Tiwary It has sparked a new debate about Bollywood’s priorities, questioning why top Hindi film stars continue to flaunt six-pack abs on screen while other major film industries don’t demand the same, and whether this comes at the cost of real craft and storytelling.

Appearing on Siddharth Kannan’s podcast, Avinash Tiwary couldn’t hold back. Stating that this body obsession is unique to Hindi cinema, Tiwary said, “Aapko kahin pe bhi, kisi industry mein… I know I will be branded for this, par kahin pe bhi 60 saal ke log 6-pack, 8-pack bana ke ghoom rahe hain? Even in Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger that is not done; Sylvester Stallone…no need (Anywhere you go, in any industry…I know I get ticked off for saying this, but do you really see 60-year-olds walking around with six-pack or eight-pack abs? Even in Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t do that; Sylvester Stallone…simply no need).He added, “There is no vanity or desirability that needs to be sold. Not even in the South. Why is Hindi only in the film industry? That is the question we all have to answer.”In the same interview, Avinash Tiwary went further, stating that Hindi film audiences have paid unusual attention to box office numbers, a habit that does not exist in other film cultures. He also asked what it says about the value placed on storytelling and skill.He mocked the promotional culture built around actors’ physiques, saying, “Someone takes off his shirt and a girl takes his hand… ek tasveer khinch jaati hai ki ‘Soon…’ and you feel, ‘arey, yeh film aa rahi hai’ (Someone takes off his shirt and a girl takes his hand… the film is actually opening”).If the goal is nothing more than visual appeal, he argued, the filmmakers could simply throw away the models, and he questioned what story, if any, he was actually telling.

The actor turned the lens on himself and other artists, questioning the deeper purpose of filmmaking. “What we sell is this obsession, ‘Subah 4 baja tu ticket leke meri film dekhne aaya.” That’s what I’m selling you. And to be honest, if I’m an artist, it’s worth asking the question: is that what you want to sell?’Actress ‘Laila Majnu’ added that if cinema is to be the art and the voice of the voiceless, that vision is sadly lacking in Hindi films today, and the audience will not demand better either.

Avinash Tiwary’s new release ‘Ginny Wedss Sunny 2’ starring Medha Shankr has hit the theaters on 24th April 2025. The film is a spiritual sequel to Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey’s ‘Ginny Weds Sunny’, which released in 2020.
