Bharathiraja‘s death has rekindled many memories of his extraordinary journey in Tamil cinema. Bharathiraja is considered as one of the finest filmmakers in the industry. He directed more than 40 films and introduced many actors and actresses who became stars. It took Tamil cinema off the studio sets and put real villages, real people and real emotions on the silver screen. Thanks to this effort, he won several awards, including six national awards and Padma Shri. However, behind the success was a man who went through all the stages of life such as rejection, ridicule and hard times before making history.
When Bharathiraja was forced out AVM studios
Long before he became a famous director, Bharathiraja was a young man with a dream of cinema. A few years later, in 1964, he gave a speech recalling an event that had a great impact. News 18 reports that he went to AVM studios with a friend during a special screening of ‘Server Sundaram’. Curious and excited, he entered the studio and sat quietly to watch the film. However, someone questioned his presence and demanded to know who he was. When no one could properly identify them, they allegedly grabbed him by the shirt and threw him out of the studio premises. The incident left young Bharathiraja heartbroken and ashamed.
A painful promise that changed his life
Instead of giving up, Bharathiraja turned that painful moment into motivation. He swore to himself as he stood outside the studio doors. One day, he would return, not as an outsider, but as an honored filmmaker invited through the front door. His struggles made him work harder and be more determined. He maintained his knowledge of film and learned from professionals in the field. Each setback only increased his determination and success.
A few years later, AVM brought him back as a successful director
Finally, Bharathiraja fulfilled his promise to himself. He made several successful films and became one of the most respected directors in Tamil cinema. He was officially invited to work with AVM Productions. AVM made ‘Pudhumai Penn’ in 1984 with Bharathiraja as director. He was now a successful filmmaker, and was embraced by the studio that had kicked him out. This story is one of the most inspiring episodes of his life.
