Bharathiraja, popularly known as ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’, changed the face of Tamil cinema with his realistic story and memorable characters. During several decades of his professional career, he made films that focused on village life, human emotions and culture. His films are fascinating to watch even in today’s times. the actor Sakshi Agarwal it commemorated the legendary filmmaker and the lasting impact of his work amid a flurry of tributes from across the industry.
Remembering the magic of simple stories
In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Sakshi Agarwal spoke about Bharathiraja’s great contribution to cinema. “Bharathiraja sir revolutionized the language of Tamil cinema. He took stories out of the studios and planted them in the soil of our villages. He made unforgettable characters out of ordinary people,” he said. “One of the most striking things about his filmmaking was that he depicted rural life in an honest, dignified and emotional way,” said the actor. “His films were not only entertaining but also allowed people to reconnect with their roots, relationships and culture,” he said.
A legacy built on real and genuine emotions
Sakshi Agarwal continued by saying that Bharathiraja’s works till date still inspire many artists of various generations. “In our case, as artists, they indicated that his films had no end of authenticity. Every scene was vivid, and every character was a true portrayal,” he explained. Although she was not able to spend much time with the director in person, she says that his films have been a part of her life. “His storytelling style will continue to influence filmmakers, actors and audiences for years to come,” he concluded.
Mayil remains an iconic figure in Tamil cinema
As for Bharathiraja’s major works, Sakshi chose to talk about Mayil’s character, Sridevi in ’16 Vayathinile’, describing her as one of the most inspiring female characters portrayed in Tamil films. “Sir Bharathiraja had a unique quality of turning ordinary people into superstars. The stories he told were very real because they were born from the essence of our culture and country,” he said. Sakshi Agarwal ended her eulogy with gratitude, thanking the renowned director for bringing reality to people and their stories.
