Singers Anup Jalota, Sonu Nigam, Sudesh Bhosle and Shaan were also seen bidding a touching farewell through music. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Kavita Paudwal, daughter of the veteran singer Anuradha PaudwalHe opened up about what made Asha Bhosle’s journey so inspiring, and also recalled his brief interaction with the icon.
‘I’ve met… even if only briefly’
Kavita revealed that she got a chance to meet Asha Bhosle because of her background in music.“I met him, but from a distance. I said Namaste,” he shared. “My father Arun Paudwal was a sound engineer and worked closely with people like Kishore Kumar, Lata ji and Asha ji. Back then, the industry was smaller—there were very good musicians, but not too many—so everybody knew everybody.”Although he did not have a deep interaction, the memory of that brief meeting has stayed with him.
“He was never restricted even though he trained classically”
Kavita emphasized how Asha Bhosle’s versatility set her apart.“He had every reason to limit himself. He could have easily said, ‘I’m classically trained, I’m not going to sing certain types of songs.’ But he never did that,” Kavita said.“Whatever he sang—whether it was classically based or completely different—he did it beautifully. That kind of openness is very rare.”
“Personal struggles never affected his art”
Reflecting on the singer’s resilience, Kavita expressed that Asha Bhosle never let her personal challenges get in the way of her profession.“One of the biggest things to learn from his life is that what’s going on in your personal life shouldn’t affect your performance,” he said.“In fact, sometimes challenges make your performance even stronger. If someone says, ‘My situation is not good, how can I do it?’, then you just look at their career. It’s so inspiring.”
“He was still singing at 92”
Kavita was in awe of Asha Bhosle’s dedication even in her later years.“He was still singing at the age of 92. That kind of passion and commitment is incredible. It’s so, so inspiring,” she said.
“Its simplicity defined its greatness”
Beyond her music, Kavita highlighted the foundational nature of the legend.“In interviews, he would say that he loves cooking for his family. Imagine, a legend of his stature finding joy in something so simple,” he said.“That’s true greatness. That’s who they were as people.”
“That generation never capitalized on their struggle”
Contrasting with today’s era, Kavita spoke about how artists like Asha Bhosle focused only on their work.“Artists like Asha ji, Lata Mangeshkar or Mohammed Rafi never spoke publicly about their struggles or used them for sympathy,” he said.“They never capitalized on difficult circumstances. Whatever challenges they faced, they focused on themselves and achieved incredible heights through it.”Summarizing her thoughts, Kavita added, “Nowadays, many people highlight their struggles, but that generation didn’t. For me, the biggest lesson is: focus on your art and let your work do the talking.”
