A Gujarat court has ordered registration of a criminal case against the filmmaker Anurag Kashyap Following the controversial social media remarks about the Brahmin community. According to a PTI report, the AS Jani Judicial Magistrate (JMFC) court ordered registration of a criminal case against Hindi filmmaker Anurag Kashyap under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 352 (intentional insult with intent to cause breach of public peace) and 353(2) falsification of information (falsification of 353).According to the court, the social media post is believed to have been made viral by the accused in such a way as to defame a particular community.
Regarding the allegation against Anurag Kashyap
The complaint was filed by the lawyer Vishwa Hindu Parishad Leader Kamlesh Raval, who hails from the Brahmin community. He had moved the court over Kashyap’s posts on X, allegedly in response to the protests against the trailer of the Hindi film ‘Phule’ on April 16 last year. According to the complaint, when the All India Brahman Samaj objected to the release of the trailer, Kashyap posted remarks denigrating the Brahmin community and continued to do so in his replies to the objectors.The complainant stated, “The entire Brahmin community has come out against the accused’s charge. This message risks spreading hostility between communities and different castes. The accused is making films in India and is also an actor. From young children to adults, everyone watches films and tries to imitate the actors.”The complaint also referred to a post by Kashyap dated January 8, 2020, in which he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Hindus and accused the Union government of being “casteist” and having a “criminal mentality”.
A unsecured warranty has already been issued against Anurag Kashyap
Raval stated that several summons were sent to Kashyapa, but he did not respond. The court then issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
