Veteran actor Anupam Kher has never shied away from talking about his humble beginnings, and his latest revelations about selling his Mumbai apartment reflect the same philosophy. The actor, who once sold the property he bought Alia Bhattnow he has explained why he consciously chose not to have a home at one point in his life.Recalling his early fights with Richa during an appearance on Zindagi, Anupam said he reached Mumbai with just Rs 37 in his pocket. Despite building a successful career over the years, he said his decisions were never driven by financial goals.
“It was a conscious decision, not a compulsion”
Opening up about selling his home nearly a decade ago, Anupam revealed that the move was deliberate and rooted in a desire for simplicity rather than necessity.“Kirron and I moved to another place, and it took us four years to find him. Then he became an MP and moved to Chandigarh. At one point, I asked him why we were looking so hard for a house. So we just started living simply,” he said, referring to his wife. Kirron Kher.He added that he found living in a rented space more grounded and less complicated, allowing him to focus on what was really important: his craft. “My goal is not just money. I want to be the best actor I can be,” he repeated.
Mother’s dream fulfilled
While he chose simplicity for himself, Anupam made sure to fulfill his mother’s wish to have a home in Shimla. He shared that she had always dreamed of a modest house, but he went one step further and bought her a much larger property.Interestingly, despite his big gesture, he still prefers a simple lifestyle and visits the house mainly in the summer.
Lessons from failure and success
Reflecting on life and ambition, the actor spoke candidly about how success can often lead to an endless search for more. “If you have 10 million, you start out wanting 20 million, then 25 million,” he said.He insists that failure has been his greatest teacher, encouraging him to evolve and continue his creativity. “Failure teaches you. It helps you grow, reinvent yourself, and reminds you that you’re alive. You shouldn’t feel sorry for yourself. Sometimes I do, but after that, I find joy in living again. People have forgotten how to really live,” he added.

For the uninitiated, Anupam’s former Mumbai apartment was bought by Alia Bhatt in 2015. According to reports, he bought two properties in a Juhu building for around Rs 8.99 crore.
