Amit Shah at NID on Sunday
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that India’s design sector needs a structure similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL) to connect creativity with commercial opportunities. Addressing the students and faculty after inaugurating the Incubation and Innovation Center at NID, Shah said sports became a viable career only after the commercial opportunities expanded through the IPL model. He said, “After the IPL, parents now ask their children to play cricket as they can make a future out of it. Similarly, the commercial potential of the design has to be fully explored.”He called for the creation of a separate vertical at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Gandhinagar to bridge the gap between design education and industry needs.“You have done a great job in setting up the incubation and innovation centre. But those who choose this field as a career need to be aligned with industry needs and financial opportunities,” he said.Shah proposed verticals should focus on commercialization, noting that institutions like NID already have strong design expertise but need mechanisms to connect creativity with market demand.“I think it can only happen if you create a separate vertical for it, because people here are designers and not commercialization experts. NID will have to bring the two together,” Shah said. The home minister also said that design should be extended to high-tech sectors like semiconductors, microchips, automobiles and industrial infrastructure.
