Salim Kumar – veteran star Malayalam cinema
Salim Kumar died at the age of 57 after suffering from health complications. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi after his condition worsened. Reports indicated that it was placed on the fan support. The actor also underwent a liver transplant a few years back after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.Salim Kumar continued to be one of the most beloved actors in Malayalam cinema. He became famous for his perfect comic timing and unforgettable characters. Over time, he also proved his mettle as a serious performer through roles of strong emotions.Born in Paravur, Salim Kumar started his artistic career through mime performances. He entertained audiences on stage before eventually entering the film industry. The actors debut was with Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam in 1997. At first, it appeared in small papers. Over the years, his film career expanded significantly and spanned over 300 films.
When he talked about quitting acting
Years ago, after receiving it National Award For ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’, reports say that Salim Kumar was planning to quit acting. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the actor addressed these rumours.“Yes, I will stop acting, but not now, only after three years. I’m 43 and I’ll retire when I’m 46.”The statement surprised many at the time as the actor was enjoying a successful phase in his career.
Why Salim Kumar wanted to leave
Salim Kumar also explained that his decision has nothing to do with losing interest in acting. Instead, he believed that life had many other responsibilities and priorities.“I don’t want to retire because I’m bored with acting. But I realize there are better things to do in life. I don’t want to limit myself to just being an actor. I’m a son, husband and father of two children. I have to take care of their needs and concerns.”He also shared his thoughts on the idea of retirement in the film industry.“I think acting also has a retirement phase. Unfortunately, the industry is not ready to accept that.”
Looking at his journey
Salim Kumar also reflected on the changing pace of his working life and how his approach to cinema has evolved over time.“Well, I used to act in four films a day. But now, I allow myself to be more selective. I don’t do more than one film a day. Like any other actor, I also look for good scripts and I want to portray some memorable characters on screen. Even two-year-olds are dying; after all, I’ve seen them, enjoyed them and been very happy for 43 years on earth.”Apart from acting, Salim Kumar also studied writing and directing. His film “Karutha Joothan” later won recognition at the Kerala State Film Awards. Today, his words and his work continue to resonate with audiences.
