Hugh Jackman fans were delighted when footage emerged of him introducing his friend Ryan Reynolds An old Australian tradition, shoey. But on closer inspection, all was not as it seemed. The 57-year-old actor seems to have taken a more hygienic shortcut than the real thing. The pair were celebrating the Bonds Flying Roos winning the SailGP competition when Reynolds posted footage of Jackman performing the ritual.
Why fans called them “fake” shoes
In a second image from the celebrations, Jackman and Reynolds posed in what appeared to be standard high-top Converse shoes that were used as drinking vessels. But a closer look and the details told a different story. The shoe was very small, and its sole had a design from the movie “Deadpool and Wolverine”, and fans concluded that it was just a prop.As it turned out, the shoe was a ceramic cup shaped like a sneaker, and fans were quick to point out that it disqualified it from shoe status.“It looks like a cup shaped like a shoe. It’s definitely not one of their dirty shoes. That’s un-Australian,” one eagle-eyed person remarked. “It’s not a shoe, unless it’s your shoe,” said another, while a third joked: “A very ‘Hollywood’ shoe.”
What happened during the celebrations
Despite the questionable vessel, the spirit of the celebration appeared to be genial enough. Jackman downed his drink and pumped his fist in the air in victory before handing Reynolds the boot. The Canadian duly put the beer around his neck as Jackman cheered him on, before dropping to one knee after a celebratory hug.Real shoe or not, the stunt drew considerable attention to Jackman and Reynolds’ support of Bonds’ Flying Roos, which took a big step forward last month. The long-time friends announced they would be involved in an upcoming series about the sailing team, drawing comparisons to Reynolds’ “Welcome to Wrexham” series and the popular Formula 1 documentary series.
