In a chat with Mid-day, the actor recalled Pahlaj Nihalani and his contributions.“We met under ridiculous circumstances in a hotel bathroom in Juhu. Pahlajji helped me out of an awkward situation and asked me to meet him at his office the next day. Then I did two films with him, ‘Aag Hi Aag’ and ‘Paap Ki Duniya’. I owe him a big thank you for starting my career.” The actor revealed that he treated Nihalani like family, but had no commitment when it came to filmmaking. “He made me 32 rebounds for my first shot; he wanted perfect.

The decision behind ‘Aankh’

Among their many collaborations, Chunky recalls ‘Aankhen’ as one of Nihalani’s most notable achievements. Despite facing scheduling hurdles, the producer pushed through and delivered one of the biggest hits of its time. “He did it under dire circumstances. No one had the date available except Govinda, David Dhawan, Anees Bazmeeand me.” The 1993 comedy was a huge success at the box office and remains one of the most famous films associated with Nihalani’s career.

Writer-director Anees Bazmee, who worked with Nihalani on several projects, remembered him as someone whose enthusiasm for cinema never waned. According to Bazmee, late-night discussions about scripts and scenes were a regular part of their working relationship.“Once, he knocked on my door at 5 in the morning. He wanted to edit the scene we were going to shoot that day. Everyone was asleep at my house, so we sat at a nearby tea stall and I wrote the changes on a piece of tissue paper. He was a manufacturer of dildos!’ Bazmee’s memoir paints a picture of a filmmaker constantly thinking of ways to improve his films, regardless of the time.

Actress Neelam also shared a fond memory from the beginning of her association with Nihalani. He recalled how confident he was about their future collaborations from their first meeting. “When I met him for a narration, he said, ‘Baby, we’re going to do a lot of hit movies together.’ I didn’t know that I would have so many successes with him.’ He described her as a warm-hearted and generous individual who always stood up for the artists she worked with.

Nihalani played a crucial role in launching Govinda’s film career. His production ‘Ilzaam’ became the actor’s debut and marked the beginning of one of Bollywood’s most successful commercial careers. He later backed several successful films featuring Govinda, helping to establish the actor as one of the leading stars of the 1980s and 1990s.

As a producer, Nihalani delivered popular entertainers like ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ and ‘Aankhen’, both of which were well received by the audience.
