Delhi University will accept Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (Gate) scores from this academic session for admission to its Master of Technology (M.Tech) program in Microwave and Communication Engineering, the first time the National Engineering Entrance Examination will be used for admission to a postgraduate degree course at the university.According to a university notification, the move has been taken after approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).In Hanit Gandhi, Dean of Admissions University of Delhisaid that the university previously used GATE scores for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) admissions, but not for postgraduate programmes.“We have used GATE score earlier for PhD admissions, but this is being used for the first time for the PG course. We will use GATE score first, but if the seats are not filled, we will use CUET-PG score for the next round as well,” Gandhi said.
GATE candidates to get first preference
The university clarified that candidates with valid GATE scores will be given preference during admission.“Candidates with valid GATE scores will be given first preference on the basis of merit in their respective categories. If any seat remains vacant in any category, it will be filled up by candidates through CUET (PG) 2026-27, as per merit, in their respective category,” the notification said.This means that candidates applying through the Common University Entrance Test for Post Graduate Programs (CUET-PG) will be considered if seats remain vacant after the GATE-based admission round.The university also clarified that admissions to the program will not be done through the Common Allocation System for Postgraduate Admission (CSAS-PG) portal. A separate admission portal will be opened for the programme.
Course Eligibility and Seat Matrix
According to the notification, applicants must possess Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Bachelor of Engineering (BE), Master of Science (MSc), Bachelor of Science in Engineering, or equivalent degree in relevant discipline from a recognized institution.Eligible subjects include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Radio Physics and Electronics Engineering.M.Tech program has total 30 seats. Of these, 13 seats are unreserved, eight are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC), four for Scheduled Castes (SC), two for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and three for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
Changes in Post Graduate Admission Process of DU
While the M.Tech program itself is not new, the admission route is changing this year.This decision also reflects how Delhi University is organizing special technical programmes. So far, postgraduate admissions to the university have mostly been linked to the CUET-PG or department-level process. The inclusion of GATE marks the first time a national engineering entrance score has been introduced into the system.(with PTI input)
