One of the greatest love stories in television history has officially come to an end. The series finale of ‘Outlander’ premiered on Starz on Friday and was set to air on Netflix on Saturday, ending the long-running fantasy drama after eight seasons spanning 12 years.Starring Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe as Jamie and Claire Fraser, there was a dramatic finale at the end that seemed to tie up all the loose ends. The episode titled ‘And the World Was All Around Us’ focused on Jamie and Claire preparing for what could be their last moments together.Armed with the foreshadowing of Frank Randall’s death, Jamie still dons his armor and goes to die at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Fighting alongside him are Young Ian, Buck MacKenzie and the men from Fraser’s Ridge. After the battle unfolds, Claire, who stayed behind with Roger MacKenzie, finally goes to the battlefield to check on Jamie. Upon arrival, he sees the aftermath of the violent conflict and joins Jamie, relieved to see him claim victory. However, moments later, Patrick Ferguson pulls out a hidden gun and shoots Jamie in the chest after he refuses to surrender. Realizing something is wrong with Jamie, Claire rushes back to find him fallen on the battlefield.Unable to contain her grief, Claire stays by Jamie’s body through the night, refusing to let go. In the final moments of the episode, fans are reminded of Season 1, when Jamie’s ghost travels back in time to look at Clair through the window. After crossing paths with Frank, he goes to the rocks and eventually grows the Forget Me Not flowers that bring Clair back to the past with him.A montage of the two characters’ most memorable moments from the eight seasons before fans return to the battlefield, with Jamie still in Claire’s arms. Although both appear to be dead at first, both characters suddenly take a deep breath, and Jamie opens his eyes, as does Claire. The scene also hinted that Claire could be the key to Jamie’s revival, as this time his hair turns completely white. The episode ended with a post-credits sequence starring Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander book series. In the scene, Gabaldon appears at a book signing, holding a leather notebook that resembles Claire’s journal from the series. When asked about it by a fan, the author avoids answering directly. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts explained the significance of the sequence. “It’s our love letter, and a thank you to all the crew that’s been there since day one. Everyone in the bookstore is someone who’s been on the show since day one. We also wanted to thank Diana Gabaldoni for creating the world. It’s really her story. I thought it was appropriate to say thank you and give the final image.”“
