Sedans strike back! How these two models triumphed in SUV-crazy India.

Over the years, the Indian car market has been moving in one direction. Bigger stance, more ground clearance and SUV badges everywhere. Almost every new car these days wants to look like an SUV. Hatchbacks have turned into crossovers, compact cars have been called “micro SUVs”, and slowly and steadily SUVs are becoming the default answer to most car-buying questions in India. However, 2025 presented an unexpected twist.India’s best-selling car last year wasn’t an SUV. The country’s most famous luxury car wasn’t even one. Instead, the two sedans quietly topped the charts in their respective segments. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire became India’s best-selling passenger car, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB took the top honor as the best-selling luxury car.

At a time when SUVs account for over 55 percent of India’s passenger vehicle market, the success of these two sedans speaks volumes. Market hype and real buyer behavior are not always the same.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire ended the calendar year 2025 with over 2.14 lakh units. It was comfortably ahead of some of the biggest SUV names in the country, including the Hyundai Creta and the Tata Nexon. Interestingly, the last time a sedan topped India’s annual sales chart was in 2019 and even then it was the Dzire.The achievement becomes even greater when you look at how aggressively the market has shifted towards SUVs in recent years. Carmakers are launching SUVs in every budget and size category. But despite all this, Desire continued to sell in huge numbers month after month. The sedan crossed 15,000 units in January 2025 and continued its pace throughout the year. Sales reached around 17,000 units in April and crossed 18,000 units in May. During the festive season, the number went above 20,000. October recorded 20,791 units, while November reached 21,082 units. December was also strong with over 19,000 units sold.

Why does Desire still connect with Indian buyers?

The reason is quite simple. Desire continues to get the basics right. Fuel efficiency still matters in a big way in India. So do maintenance costs and reliability. Dzire’s low running costs, extensive service network and stress-free drivability attract buyers in cities and small towns alike. The growing popularity of different types of CNG has also played an important role here.

Yes, fleet demand is also an important factor. The Dzire is one of the favorite cars for taxi operators and app-based mobility services, but it would be unfair to put its success down to flat sales alone.The latest generation model has also brought in more private buyers with updated styling, new features and a greater focus on safety. Buyers today may appreciate SUVs, but many still choose cars that are economical and easy to live with every day.

How E-Class LWB Became a Favorite of Luxury Buyers

Interestingly, a similar trend can be seen at the other end of the market. In India’s luxury segment, Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB became the best-selling luxury car in FY2026. This happened despite luxury SUVs dominating the conversation and social media attention. The reason again comes down to the preferences of Indian buyers.

India remains a driver-driven luxury market. For many buyers in this segment, rear-seat comfort is more important than aggressive styling or off-road capability. The E-Class long-wheelbase delivers exactly what this set of customers want. It offers generous rear-seat space, similar to a Mini-S-Class, at a relatively low price point.

Apart from that, the sedan also continues to offer some advantages from behind the wheel. Compared to SUVs, sedans generally have a lower center of gravity. This improves stability at high speeds and gives drivers more confidence during cornering. Although SUVs offer commanding visibility and road presence, many driving enthusiasts still prefer the balanced driving feel of a sedan.

Sedans are no longer mainstream, but they are far from dead.

For all the attention SUVs get today, the 2025 proved that there’s still something special about a well-appointed sedan. The Dzire delivers performance and everyday ease. The E-Class LWB provides comfort and a decent driving feel. Two completely different cars, two completely different buyers, but the result is the same. When the package feels right, Indian consumers are still happy to choose a sedan over the SUV crowd.
