‘Karuppu’ created a huge buzz before its theatrical release, despite last-minute release issues. The film was originally scheduled to release on May 14, but unexpected financial and production issues pushed it back. Despite getting permission from the Tamil Nadu government for 9 am screenings, several theaters were unable to screen the film as scheduled. After reporting the continuous efforts and financial support of those in charge Suriyathe film was finally released on May 15th. The premiere drama shocked fans, but viewers continued to support the group online.
From “Maasani Amman” to “Karuppu”
Interestingly, the project did not start as a Suriya film. Movie Tamil reports that director RJ Balaji initially planned the story as a female-centric film titled ‘Maasani Amman’, and Trisha Krishnan in the main role The script was said to focus on devotion, justice and emotional conflicts related to the village deity Maasani Amman.Later, RJ Balaji narrated the story to Suriya after adding commercial and massive elements for fans. Suriya reportedly liked the script immediately, and the project slowly turned into a bigger action entertainer. Soon after, the producers of ‘Karuppu’ joined the project.
‘Karuppu’ release rounds
The film officially began with a pooja ceremony at the Masani Amman temple in late 2024. Initially, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman was expected to compose the music. He was later replaced by young composer Sai Abhyankkar.The title and teaser of ‘Karuppu’ were released on Suriya’s birthday and received a huge response online. The makers planned the first film for a Diwali release. Later, the release was shifted to Pongal 2026. But after ‘Jana Nayagan’ locked down the Pongal slot, the team again changed plans and moved towards a summer release.
‘Karuppu’ release delay surprises fans
Despite strong advance bookings and high expectations, ‘Karuppu’ faced unexpected hurdles before its release. It was also reported that Hombale Films’ financial and production issues delayed the process. As a result, many theaters had to cancel the morning screening on May 14, disappointing many people who wanted to see the film’s launch. However, these problems were resolved, and the film was released on May 15. The film underwent many changes; her first name was ‘Maasani Amman’.
