Kia India recently launched the new second generation Kia Seltos in the Indian market, bringing major updates in terms of design, features and underpinnings. However, despite the SUV’s relatively recent launch, the model has once again been spotted undergoing road tests, hinting at the possibility of a new powertrain option under development. The latest generation Seltos introduces a completely redesigned exterior with a more premium cabin layout packed with new-age technology and comfort features. The SUV is also based on Kia’s new K3 platform, which is expected to support electric powertrain options in the future.

Now, with new test mules being spotted soon after the launch of the latest model, speculations about a hybrid version of the Seltos are gathering pace. While Kia has yet to confirm anything officially, testing activity suggests that the company is evaluating a hybrid setup for the SUV. A hybrid-powered Seltos could help Kia improve its fuel efficiency figures, and it would also allow the Seltos to compete better with rivals that are increasingly focusing on stronger hybrid technology.
Details about the hybrid powertrain are still under wraps. However, the Seltos is expected to use a self-charging hybrid setup instead of a plug-in hybrid system. Recently, the Seltos Hybrid was showcased at the New York International Auto Show for the US market. The US-spec Kia Seltos Hybrid is equipped with a 1.6-liter petrol-hybrid powertrain with an all-wheel drive setup. However, the India-spec version is expected to offer a smaller 1.5-litre hybrid unit with front-wheel drive.

The hybrid version of the Kia Seltos is expected to retain the same overall design as the standard model, with the exterior unlikely to undergo any major visual changes. In terms of design, the front end of the new Seltos is clearly inspired by Kia’s larger global SUVs. Its grille now dominates the fascia with a bold, stepped pattern highlighted by vertical gunmetal inserts, spanning almost the entire width of the nose. Squared-off LED headlamps sit at either corner, continuing the upright theme, while DRLs create a vertical light signature that’s further accentuated by the lightning bolt-shaped LED element mounted on the outer edges. Underneath, the bumper features a contrasting black cladding and neatly integrated, rectangular surrounds for the fog lamps, which add to the SUV’s robust appearance. On the sides, the shoulder line is more pronounced, the wheel arches are sharper and it gets redesigned 18-inch wheels. Traditional pull-type handles have been replaced with flush-mounted units. Kia has retained its signature pinch in the window line near the C-pillar, but it now flows into a blacked-out element that visually connects the rear quarter glass with the windscreen, giving the SUV a wrap-around effect. At the rear, the number plate holder has been moved to the bumper for a cleaner tailgate, but the real highlight is the new inverted L-shaped LED light signature.Photo: r/CarsIndia – Reddit
