In an official media advisory issued on Tuesday, the BCCI confirmed that Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium will host the IPL 2026 final on May 31, though Bengaluru was initially named as the venue.
Operational and logistical reasons for the shift
“Bangalore was originally nominated to host the final. However, due to certain demands from the local association and authorities which were beyond the scope of BCCI established guidelines and protocols, the venue was changed and reassigned,” the advisory said.

Before todayit is understood that the ongoing administrative mess over tickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium forced the board to shift the title clash back to the venue where the final of the 2025 edition was hosted.The move also means that Ahmedabad will host the IPL final for the fourth time in five seasons, having previously contested the title in 2022, 2023, 2025 and now 2026.Interestingly, this is not the first time that the traditional ‘defending champions host the final’ convention has been flouted.
Why did Ahmedabad host IPL finals in 2022 and 2025?
After Chennai Super Kings won IPL 2021, there was an expectation that Chennai could host the 2022 final when the tournament returns to India entirely after the pandemic. Instead, the BCCI awarded the play-off and the final to Ahmedabad. However, reports at the time and BCCI’s scheduling decisions pointed to a combination of post-COVID logistical planning and crowd capacity.IPL 2022 was still held under critical operational precautions following the pandemic. The league stage itself was limited to venues in Maharashtra to minimize travel and bio-bubble complications. When the playoff venues were announced, Kolkata hosted Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Ahmedabad hosted Qualifier 2 and the final.A similar situation emerged in IPL 2025. After Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL 2024 trophy, Eden Gardens was originally allotted the Qualifier 2 and Final under the regular host convention. But the temporary suspension of the tournament after India-Pakistan tensions forced the BCCI to extend the season window from May 25 to June 3, making scheduling and logistics quite complicated.This expansion immediately brought the weather into focus. With the early onset of the Southwest Monsoon forecast over East India, fears of rain disruption in Kolkata during the final week of the tournament are on the rise. Ahmedabad, in comparison, was seen as a safer option in terms of weather.
