Subhash Ghai recalls the casting story
As reported by The New Indian Express, filmmaker Subhash Ghai shared an interesting anecdote about Sanjay Khalnayak’s casting. “When I started working on Khalnayak, the news spread in the industry. Many stars met me and expressed interest in doing the film. But I told them, ‘I already have an actor in mind’. I invited Sanju and narrated the story. He said, ‘Sir, I trust you. We are doing this film’.”The film went on to become one of the most important releases of the 1990s. It featured Sanjay Dutt as the iconic Ballu, along with Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff.
Jail time ‘Khalnayak 2’ idea
Sanjay Dutt also shared how the idea for ‘Khalnayak Returns’ came to him during his stint in jail in the 1990s. “I thought of making Khalnayak part 2 in jail (smiling). I used to play music inside the jail. Prisoners insisted only on Khalnayak songs. “Agar Khalnayak phir se banaye, toh kaun dekhna chahega? (If Khalnayak is remade, who would like it”) I asked. All 4000 prisoners said together that they would like to see it. I said, “Send me a one-page idea for the movie.” It took me a long time to read 4000 pages! One of the ideas I received appealed to me.”Dutt added, “I was under condition, and I called sir (Subhash Ghai). I told him about that idea.
