Vir Das asks why India can’t have ‘Conan-style’ hosting
Vir Das took to his Instagram to ask why “Conan-style” hosting isn’t happening at Indian film events. He wrote: “Why doesn’t India make a Gervais or even a Conan-style host of major film awards? Well, as someone who scripted many of India’s awards for five years.”He added: “Here’s why. For comedians to host the Oscars or film awards and burn them for a night, a buffoon humanizes the world’s chosen most beautiful people because they were already celebrating. Then any joke is a joke.” He also explained: “Here, the star egos won’t take a joke from anyone who isn’t on their level. Ironically, the bigger the star who hosts, the harder it is. Like three people on that level. So a giant star host works for the people in the room, it’s not always fun for the people watching. It’s just that the power imbalance is off.”
