In an interview on Divya Jain’s YouTube channel, Sonu opened up about her strong relationship with Salman Khan on the sets of ‘Dabangg’. As he explained, he initially refused the project because he was uncomfortable with the role, but he convinced the director Abhinav Kashyap to revise after some discussion. “Initially I refused Dabangg because I didn’t really understand that part. Then I sat down with the director and suggested some changes. We sat down together and changed that character a lot, added some humor to it and that’s how it became entertaining,” he said.

Sonu responded to his doubt about taking up a villainous part by saying, “I wasn’t too worried if it’s positive or negative. I said if it brings a smile to people’s faces and entertains, then it’s great. He recalled politely turning down the pitch to return to Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan’s ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012) as the script didn’t click with him. “For Dabangg 2, Salman and Arbaaz wanted me on board. I didn’t understand that script when I first heard it. At first I was a bit hesitant to say no. Then I thought I should go ahead and say what I feel. I spoke to Arbaaz bhai,” he said.“I told him I don’t understand this role. He said it’s good, we’ll do it, like we did in the first one. But I knew I wouldn’t be able to fix much, so I forgave them and wished them well and that when you do, I’ll be the first to see,” he recalled.
