Schools and colleges will remain closed in several states on April 9, 2026 due to state assembly elections in various states. Schools will remain closed in Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The holiday has not been restricted to educational institutions but has been extended to government offices, private establishments and commercial establishments at important locations, giving it the status of a civic holiday on Election Day.
Implementation of complete holiday in Kerala and Puducherry
In Kerala, which will witness voting for all 140 legislative assembly seats in a single phase, educational institutions, whether government-run, aided or private, will be completely shut down. A state with a strong tradition of high voter turnout will see polling booths set up in many schools. Puducherry, with its total of 30 assembly seats, is set to witness complete closure of schools and colleges.
Schools closed in Assam
In the case of Assam, where voting will be held in all 126 assembly seats, the district-level administration is likely to issue orders to close schools in the parts that will serve as polling stations. However, the decision will not be made uniformly at the state level, but the use of school buildings to conduct the polling process is certain.
