We’ve seen several actors who first showcased their talent on television dominate the big screen. Over time, they successfully transitioned to cater to a larger audience. From Kiccha Sudeep to Rocking Star Yashhere’s a look at some of the Sandalwood actors who made a remarkable transition to films.
Kiccha Sudeep
One of the biggest stars Sandalwood in the industry for over 25 years, he started his acting journey in the short-lived Kannada serial, ‘Premada Kadambari’. After her success on television, she took up her first film role in ‘Thayavva’. Then he also acted in ‘Prathyartha’. His major breakthrough came with the 2001 film ‘Huchcha’, which skyrocketed his stardom. Interestingly, this film is where his intense performance earned him the iconic nickname “Kiccha” and made him a star in Kannada cinema.
Yash
The Rocking Star started as a television actor with the popular daily soap ‘Nanda Gokula’. Interestingly, this was the serial in which he shared the screen with his future wife and actress Radhika Pandit, who has a similar story of making her way from television to the big screen.
Yash also worked in popular shows including ‘Preeti Illada Mele’, ‘Malebillu’, ‘Silli Lalli’ and ‘Mukta’. After doing several roles, she made her silver screen debut in the 2007 film ‘Jambada Hudugi’ in a supporting role. A year later, he made his breakthrough with the film ‘Moggina Manasu’, which brought him praise and applause. His presence in India cannot go unnoticed, his popularity grew tremendously with Prashanth Neel’s ‘KGF’ franchise. Released in 2018 and 2022, he became a superstar with fans waiting for his next project with high expectations. He will next be seen in ‘Toxic’ and ‘Ramayana’.
Ganesha
Another big name in the Kannada industry named Golden Star Ganesh rose to fame on television as the host of the very popular comedy show ‘Comedy Time’. As for his film debut, in the beginning of his career, he played comic roles as a supporting character, but later in 2006, his romantic drama film ‘Mungaru Male’ became a hit.
Rachita Ram
He made his debut on television as an actor with the popular show ‘Arasi’. In the telenovela, she played the lead role of Rashmi, who showcased her prowess in front of the camera. Later, he made his opposite debut Darshan In ‘Bulbul’. The film was her breakthrough, earning her the nickname “Dimple Queen” among her fans. He also starred in hits like ‘Ranna’, ‘Chakravyuha’ and ‘Ayogya’, making him one of the biggest actors in Kannada cinema.
Prakash Raj
The ‘Singham’ actor started working in the entertainment world through Kannada and Tulu serials. He later transitioned to cinema with supporting and character roles in early Kannada films and later expanded his reach to a pan-Indian audience.
Darshan
Challenging Star entertained audiences with small soap opera roles on Kannada television in the mid-1990s. His first lead and breakthrough role on the big screen was in ‘Majestic’, which established him as a mass hero. He then went on to score many commercial hits like ‘Kariya’, ‘Saarathi’ and ‘Yajamana’. These transitions from small screen soaps and shows to the big screen show how Kannada television was just a launch pad for many of Sandalwood’s biggest stars.
