Spotlight on Ranveer’s Sher-e-Baloch banger: ‘Didi’ by Algerian maestro Khaled. The 1992 release, which topped the charts as a true chartbuster, has been reimagined, revived and localized, including in Hindi, decades before ‘Dhurandhar 2’. Called Cheb Khaled, he weaves a story of deep intimacy in this Arabic raï hit. Excerpt from translation: “I’m burning in the fire of love, but you’re not. I won’t take you away from me so that I don’t cry (always stay close). But I just have bad luck and fate. Take it (Didi Didi), Take it, beautiful girl. Ranveer Singh’s anthem is currently ruling the global charts
“Didi” topped the charts in France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Egypt and Saudi Arabia upon its release. It also kicked off the 2010 FIFA World Cup as one of the opening tracks.As reported by Mid-Day earlier, Ranveer lands a ‘FA9LA-esque’ banger in ‘Dhurandhar 2’. Its sequence was shot just a day before the shooting of Akshaye Khanna’s ‘FA9LA’ in rugged Ladakh. After the death of Akshaye’s character Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar, the title Sher-e-Baloch is given to Ranveer’s Hamza in the sequel. The song is a celebration of his ascension. Aditya shot Ranveer’s number on the same set in Ladakh. He decided to record both songs at once because the set was standing, and given the difficult climatic conditions, it didn’t make sense to return to Ladakh for just one song later.
Ranveer Singh’s ‘Didi’
An early remix came from Moroccan-Belgian artist Brahim in 2005, who layered English lyrics. In 2007, the German duo Milk & Honey released a full English rendition with fresh lyrics and a revamped arrangement. Since then, the track has appeared in Greek, Spanish, Russian, Albanian, Turkish, Persian, Urdu, Serbian and German, among many other languages.
Other Bollywood renditions of ‘Didi’ song
Indian cinema has taken up the song time and again. It gained traction through unauthorized copies, including the hit song “Ladki Ladki” from the 1993 Bollywood film “Shreemaan Aashique”. Bappi Lahiri and Kavita Krishnamurthy sampled it in “Suno Suno Meri Rani Ji” from the 1994 film ‘Brahma’. The 1995 Malayalam film ‘Highway’ featured almost the entire song, starring Silk Smitha, with a TV clip from Khaled’s original video.Recently, the 2016 Bollywood hit ‘Airlift’ featured as the Hindi song “Dil Cheez Tujhe De Di”, performed by Arijit Singh and Ankit Tiwari, with Akshay Kumar.
