Renowned filmmaker and actor R. Parthiban issued a late-night audio clarification and apology following criticism over a caste-related remark at a high-profile film event. Known for his poetic and often abstract speeches, the National Award winner found himself at the center of a social media storm after he introduced himself using his caste identity at the pre-release event of the Telugu film ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ in Hyderabad.

During the promotional event Pawan Kalyan On 15 March 2026, Parthiban tried to bridge the gap between Telugu audiences by discussing his heritage. Addressing the large crowd, Parthiban introduced himself as “Naidu boy” referring to his ancestral roots. Although intended as an ice breaker, the comment was met with immediate backlash online. Critics argued that a founder of his stature, who often speaks of progressive and humanitarian values, should avoid mentioning caste identity.The actor was already being scrutinized for a recent offhand remark about the actor Trisha Krishnancalling him “a Kundavai who has to sit at home”, which quickly escalated this second controversy.

In an attempt to put an end to the problem, Parthiban released an audio byte of almost four minutes on March 17 at 1:00 am. He explained: “Though I may be tied to Tamil, I cannot change my birth certificate. My birth is not my responsibility. No child chooses the parents or the home they are born into.”

In a humble tone, he stated that he is not an egotistical person and offered a heartfelt apology to whoever was hurt by his words. Parthiban revealed that he felt very “tense” on stage as he is not fluent in Telugu. She admitted to trying to connect through some shared cultural words that she stumbled through anxiety.Parthiban added that despite his different background, he is a Tamil man whose life is connected to Tamil. He said that Tamil has given him everything: his job, his respect, his life and his love. She added that she was afraid to speak at the event because she does not know how to speak Telugu and felt nervous on stage. Concluding his remarks, Parthiban asked everyone to stop discussing the issue negatively and learn to move on.
