Film maker Aditya DharHis fearless approach to storytelling earns him praise from his former mentor Priyadarshanespecially since Dhurandhar 2 continues to break its record. Talking about Dhar’s conviction, Priyadarshan highlighted how the director has managed to challenge conventional industry formulas.“Some people are keen. I have seen two types of people. One is Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who made Animal, and another. Aditya Dhar. I asked them: ‘What gives you the confidence to work on a four-hour film?’ They said, “It will work, sir.” It defies all theories of a successful film. No producer will ever let you make a four-hour film, but the director’s conviction is the last thing,” he told India Today.
‘He learned on his own’
Reflecting on Dhar’s journey from assistant to director, how filmmaker Priyadarshan evolved during his early years working on films like Aakrosh and Tezz.“I never taught anything to Aditya, but he learned. That’s the only way to make films. I never went to any school, I watched films and learned from the masters. Similarly, Aditya… I don’t know if I taught him anything, but being with me, he learned on his own,” he said.In a rare moment of humility, Priyadarshan added, “He did things better than me, and that’s how Dhurandhar happened.”
The anxiety of Friday still lingers
Despite his patronage of new-age filmmakers, Priyadarshan admits that the anxiety surrounding film releases hasn’t changed for him over the years.“Whenever a film releases, I get nervous for two days because the first two days are your test, whether you are right or wrong. Even after 40 or 50 years, I get the same tension every time it releases. I want to know how people will accept it,” he said, referring to the film Bhooth Bangla, which releases on April 10. Meanwhile, Dhurandhar 2 continues its impressive run at the box office. Movie protagonists Ranveer SinghR Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, Sanjay Dutt and Rakesh Bedi in pivotal roles, and is currently enjoying a dream run in theatres.
