The Center has announced a major change for highway users, with cash payments to be stopped at toll plazas from April 10. The move, notified by the Road Transport Ministry, is aimed at reducing long queues at toll gates and making highway travel easier for commuters.

Officials have also warned that vehicles without proper payment may be denied entry or removed from the highway under existing laws.The decision is part of a wider push by the National Highways Authority of India to transition to an all-electronic toll collection system.
The government is also looking into misuse of toll exemptions. Instead of allowing motorists to show ID cards at the booths, eligible users will now need “Exemption FASTags.” Others can opt for a Rs 3,075 annual FASTag pass, which allows private cars to cross 200 toll plazas.Additionally, if any toll charges are not paid, the authorities can issue an e-notice.
