A unique cyberpunk story set in 2046
‘Masthishka Maranam’ stands out for its futuristic setting and bold concept. The film is set in 2046 in a dystopian Neo Kochi. It perfectly blends cyberpunk elements with dark humor.The plot follows Bimal, a grieving father struggling to cope with the loss of his daughter. His wife erases their children’s memories to move on. However, Bimal refuses to leave. He begins to explore other people’s experiences of death and in one such attempt acquires the memories of an actor. This leads to witnessing a shocking murder.
Critical reception
The film received mixed and positive reactions from the audience. A review stated, “Like Krishand’s other films, this one is full of honesty and a desire to create. A few things where I noted – 1. His other films had some kind of flow. This one was a bit more of a mess, at least in the first half. 2. The world building and characters were fine, and the pop culture was spot on, Raj was spot on. Divyaprabha and Amit are doing great and the legendary Jagadish gives another fine performance.“Another review said: “The concept had real potential, and a lot of the dialogue really landed – there were moments that made the audience laugh. But that’s where the positives end. Beyond that, it’s just a story stretched beyond its limits with overly repetitive scenes, buried in visual overstimulation and painfully exaggerated acting. There’s no emotional payoff, no real takeaway, just noise. Honestly, one of the weakest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Very different from what we usually expect from such a powerful film industry.”The film has outstanding performances by Rajisha Vijayan along with Divyaprabha and Amit. Veteran actor Jagadish also delivers a memorable role.‘Masthishka Maranam’ had a slow start at the box office.
