Konkona Sensharma on escaping the patriarchy
In an interview with News18, while admitting that many women in the industry are silenced or marginalized for speaking out, Konkona Sensharma was candid about how her experience has been different. She said, “I’m in a unique position of privilege. I’ve been an actor for so many years. I’m relatively well-known, so maybe I won’t be dismissed so easily. Education also plays a role here.”
He also spoke directly about his mother, a veteran filmmaker Aparna Senhas adapted that privilege. He added, “I have a lot of privileges in this particular situation. So mine may not be the most common experience. But there are women who have suffered because of patriarchy, and men too. They are not able to find a voice or a chance, unfortunately.”

Konkona Sensharma points out that while some things have improved over the years, such as women now being allowed to work as make-up artists on film sets, progress in other technical departments remains incredibly slow.According to him, “equality of opportunity is great, along with the gender wage gap that exists. In earlier films, even seven or eight years ago, only men were allowed to be make-up artists, and women were allowed to be hairdressers. But that has changed, and that is a wonderful thing.”
