“Karisma Kapoor would send someone to check Raveena Tandon’s outfits, ask her stylist to take note,” recalls designer Ashley Rebello | Hindi Movie News

Friction between off-screen Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon While filming Andaz Apna Apna has long been the stuff of Bollywood legends. Over the years, as well Aamir Khan and Raveena have talked about how the lead actors struggled to fit in on set. Now, costume designer Ashley Rebello has shed new light on how this rivalry spilled over into her on-screen appearances, especially the costumes.Rebello, who earlier worked with Aamir Khan in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, recalled how he got the chance to design Andaz Apna Apna. After his previous project, he said he expected more offers, but when that didn’t happen, he briefly moved on to production work. In an ad with Raveena, she solved a last-minute wardrobe problem after her designer revealed she didn’t have one.“I went to Raveena and asked what the problem was with her outfit. I said I would fix it, and I delivered the intended outfit on time. After trying it on, she said, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing. Did you do this?’ He asked me what I do, and I told him that I am a designer and I worked for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. He said, “Oh, are you that Ashley Rebello?” I said yes. Then he asked me why I wasn’t doing more films. I told him that no one was offering me a job. Raveena told me, “Ashley, don’t wait for people to give you work, ask for it.” So I asked him if he would give me a job, and he said of course. He called me at home and told me that a new movie was about to start. That film was Andaz Apna Apna,” he said in a podcast with Avinash Tripathi. He went on to explain that the competition between the actors also affected how they portrayed themselves on screen, especially in the song ‘Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori’. “Raveena told me that we had to wear nightgowns for the song, but we had to make them look different. I watch a lot of English movies, so I wanted to bring that aesthetic to Hindi cinema. I added feathers and fur to her nightgowns. The director loved it and said it looked beautiful and could become a trend. There were three nightgowns on the same song, and we made each one better.”Rebello Karisma’s team followed Raveena’s look throughout the shoot.“At that time, Karisma would often send someone from her team to see what Raveena’s outfits looked like, who was designing them and what exactly was being done. Then she would tell her stylist to take care. Raveena looked fabulous in the film. Little did I know then that I would end up working with Karisma in so many films.”The tense dynamic between the cast has been acknowledged many times over the years. Aamir Khan once called the shoot chaotic due to conflicting schedules and interpersonal tensions.“It was a beautiful time we lived, it was also a tough time because I was the only actor who came on time. No one else would do it. Then Raveena and Karisma also had some problems, they didn’t get along. When Raveena came, Karisma would leave, and vice versa. I wondered how the film would end since we couldn’t shoot together. The film was finally made with great difficulty,” he said at the 2025 India Today Conclave. Raveena Tandon herself admitted that despite the friction, it was a memorable experience.“It was funny when we were shooting because none of us were talking to each other. Everyone was having their own struggles. Aamir and Salman weren’t talking to each other. Karisma and I weren’t talking, and neither were Salman and Rajkumar Santoshi. I don’t know how the movie was made. But it shows that we are good actors.’ He also shared that Salman Khan and Aamir Khan tried to reconcile the two actors during the climax sequence.“The guys tried to get Karisma and I together. In a climactic scene, there’s a scene where we’re tied to a pillar. Rajji said, ‘We’re not going to release you if you don’t talk to each other’. It was all very funny. We laughed a lot during the shoot because the dialogues were so funny. We had fun and even wrestled.”Released in 1994, Andaz Apna Apna may not have made much of an impact at the box office initially, but over time it has achieved cult status, with its quirky characters and iconic dialogues continuing to resonate with audiences.
