Justin Bieber fans took to social media to slam her “lazy” headlining gig at Coachella. The singer was reportedly paid around $10 million, the most ever paid to an artist at the event. However, fans were not impressed when he took to the stage for his set and performed his hits from a laptop in shorts and a hoodie. The singer also left a band, background dancers for a laptop with a simple light show.Much of the backlash was also about the industry’s supposed “double standards,” with fans drawing comparisons. Sabrina Carpenter who hit the stage on Friday, and was being paid just $5 million. “If Sabrina Carpenter did what Justin Bieber is doing right now, his career would be over,” read one comment, while another added: “Justin Bieber playing songs from his laptop on stage, Sabrina Carpenter provided several costume changes, visuals, choreography and vocals. These pictures speak louder than words.”Several users pointed out the differences in expectations placed on male and female performers. “Female artists go all out: planes, high notes, fireworks, costumes. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber, Coachella’s most expensive performer, sits in a plain t-shirt, plays on YouTube, no make-up and still gets a pass? Would the roles be reversed and a woman would be instantly creeped out,” one post read. Justin Bieber’s performance has been called “disrespectful”.Others called the performance a lack of energy and professionalism. “He doesn’t give a damn [care]streaming videos and music from his laptop…it’s disrespectful to do something like that as a headliner,” another user wrote. Another commenter said: “The difference in performances is really crazy. Men really get away with anything. Sabrina put on a whole show while in a hoodie with a microphone and laptop.“Fans have blasted Justin’s $10 million USD salarySome also hit out at reports of Bieber’s fee, with one posting: “I can’t believe I paid $10 million… to sit on the floor for 20 minutes,” while another added: “This may actually be the worst performance I’ve ever seen… pure effort, pure laziness.”The reaction compared to previous Coachella headliners such as BeyoncĂ© and Lady Gagaboth were widely praised for their elaborate and energetic sets, while taking considerably less pay for their shows.
