In the middle of a fight scene, he stepped forward and suddenly slid off the edge, crashing into an audience member’s lap.The theater went from excitement to chaos in seconds.“When I fell off the stage into the lap of an unhappy audience member, I told the whole audience, ‘I’m not doing this,'” McKellen, 86, told the Los Angeles Times. “I mean, I’m an actor who controls what he’s doing.”But this time he couldn’t stop what was happening.Someone left a newspaper on stage, and that was all it took. He pulled her over the edge. The house lights went up, the staff scrambled and the show was canceled as the theater emptied. Later, doctors found a broken wrist and a neck wound. He spent three nights in hospital and missed the rest of the run of the London play, taking him out of the tour on doctors’ orders.At the time, things felt much worse. Lying on the stage, he admits that he thought it was the end. “As they put me on the stage, I said, ‘I’m dying.’ And I thought so. I was out of control. I never want to feel that out of control.’ Even talking about it now, he struggles: “I don’t really like talking about it, because it was a very emotional business.“However, working on a film set was a little easier. “I was able to go back to X-Men territory and destroy New Jersey, effortlessly,” he added, “I was able to do all the filming. But the set…” he said.McKellen made a small comeback with two charity shows and enjoyed hearing the audience laugh again, but he hasn’t had a full run yet.“I liked being in front of an audience again. I got all the laughs. So I’m good. But I haven’t been in a play yet,” he said. LAT reported that he may return to the stage in a London-based production, but McKellen said: “We’re still trying to figure it out.”
