New Delhi: Beyond Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, batsman Shreyas Iyer opened up about a tough phase in his career after suffering a severe spleen injury during a tour of Australia. The injury forced him to be taken to the hospital and he suffered a significant weight loss. “Coming back after an injury is always difficult. I lost about 7kg because of the injury, it was very severe. Thankfully, I came back in good shape after two months. But it took a lot of hard work to get back those 7kg. I had to enjoy the challenges, and I had to overcome it. I’m glad I got through that phase and came back, and I represented India in the last series and felt that I represented my team. About me, Ayer told reporters at the preseason press conference.
Despite the setback, Iyer worked hard to regain his fitness and return to competitive cricket. He resumed playing as Mumbai’s captain in domestic cricket with mixed results, including a mediocre ODI series against New Zealand. Still, his focus remained on improvement and leadership from the front. Talking about his recovery again, he said, “It’s always difficult to come back after an injury. I had lost about seven kilos, and it took a lot of effort to regain that weight. But I like challenges. I’m glad I got over that part of my life, and I’m proud to be back here and represent the team.” Now leading the Punjab Kings, Iyer’s focus is on winning the IPL trophy. “Expectations are high, which is fun. I like the challenge. But the important thing is that every time we step in, we have to win. My eyes are on the trophy,” he added. He emphasized the team’s bond off the field, saying, “This is the period where we live as a family for two months,” and highlighted how spending time together helps performance.Team mate Arsdeep Singh “When you feel the pressure, it’s a privilege,” echoed the positive energy.
