Afrika Bambaataa, a man considered one of the main pioneers of hip-hop, died on April 8. He was 67 years old. The DJ, rapper and producer’s death is linked to complications from cancer.

TMZ reports that Bambaataa passed away at a hospital in Pennsylvania after battling cancer-related health challenges.“Hip Hop will never be the same without him; but all hip hop is today is because of him. His spirit lives on in every beat, every figure and every corner of this world he touched,” his talent agency, Naf Management Entertainment, wrote in a statement on Tuesday.

Bambaataa was born in The Bronx and quickly rose through the ranks of the local gang, the Black Spades, to become a “warlord”. Beginning in the 1970s, Bambaataa started throwing parties where hip-hop flourished, and quickly grew into a huge block party in the South Bronx. Bambaataa released his first single in 1980, titled ‘Zulu Nation Throwdown’, a reference to the Universal Zulu Nation, an art collective of socially conscious rappers, graffiti artists, B-boys and other people involved in hip hop culture, and his 1982 song “Planet Rock” peaked at #4 on the US R&B chart.In 1985, Bambaataa helped create the anti-apartheid album ‘Sun City’ with several major artists including Joey Ramone and Run-DMC, U2 and many others.Towards the end of his life, Afrika Bambaataa faced numerous legal problems after several men accused him of sexual abuse in the 1980s and 1990s.
