He took Gina Gershon’s “exploitative” script
Entertainment Weekly reported that in an interview promoting his memoir 2026, Gershon shared that he had been offered the lead role in “Friday the 13th Part 2.” He was excited, as any newcomer would be. But then he learned more about the role, especially the death scene. It turns out, his character was supposed to die topless before he died. Gershon said the detail felt unnecessary and made him uncomfortable.She told Fox News Digital: “I was offered a role in that movie. And of course I was very excited to be in movies, but it definitely felt kind of exploitative and a little silly that I had to take my top off right before she died.”He delves into his book. “At the time, those kinds of slasher movies always had girls killed with their breasts exposed,” he wrote. “My character was going to die through the heart, blood dripping t—-. I thought it was pretty lame: exploitation 101.”According to Gershon, it was the early days of his career, and this could be his first role on the big screen. She didn’t completely avoid nudity, as she would do a lot of it later in films. However, Gershon explained how this particular scene did not sit well.So he asked his father for his opinion.Gershon said, “I was very lucky to have a father who really taught me to believe in my decisions. It wasn’t like I had to rebel against my family. I remember asking him about it, thinking, ‘No daughter of mine will do that!’ And he said: ‘It is your body. If you’re comfortable, I’m comfortable.”Finally, his gut called him. “When I sat down and thought about it, I thought, ‘I don’t want to do this. I didn’t feel like it. I thought it was stupid,'” she said. “That I have nothing against nudity – I grew up on European films – but if it makes sense to the character and the story. But when it looks silly, I don’t know. I felt it was something that wasn’t for me.”Gershon made his screen debut the same year in ‘Beatlemania: The Movie’, playing a dancer. She continued to work, taking small roles, for example in the film ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, and eventually landed in the films ‘Pretty in Pink’, ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Jungle Fever’. Her breakthrough came with ‘Showgirls’ where she played Cristal Connors. That film had plenty of nudity and even harsher scenes, but it was different because Gershon believed the story made sense.
