Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has filed a lawsuit. In his petition, Gambhir has named several social media accounts, intermediaries and e-commerce platforms as defendants. He has sought a permanent injunction to prevent her from using his name, image, voice or persona without her consent.
The suit has been filed against 16 defendants, including identified social media accounts (JanKey Frames, Bhupendra Paintola, Legends Revolution, gustakhedits, cricket_memer45, GemsOfCrickets, Crickaith, Sunny Upadhyay, @imRavY_), e-commerce platforms (Amazon, Inc. Platforms, Intermedia Platforms). X Corporation, Google LLC / YouTube), and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Telecommunications as proforma parties to facilitate the enforcement of any court order.The former BJP MP has sought an immediate ex parte interim injunction to remove all such material and prevent further circulation while the case is pending.The petition also seeks damages of Rs 2.5 crore along with return of accounts.According to the petition, since late 2025 there has been an increase in fabricated digital content created using AI tools such as face swapping and voice cloning, which allegedly show him making statements he never made.Some of these videos – including fake resignation announcements and fabricated remarks about senior cricketers – received millions of views, which, they said, misled the public and affected his reputation, the filing said.Gambhir has also alleged that his identity has been used for commercial purposes by selling unauthorized items on the e-commerce platform without any permission or license.The lawsuit is filed against 16 defendants, including intermediaries such as social media accounts, platform operators and e-commerce entities. Government authorities are included as pro forma parties to ensure compliance with any court directives.The petition seeks provisions under the Copyright Act, the Trademarks Act and the Commercial Courts Act. It also relies on judicial precedents that recognize personality and publicity rights as enforceable, including in AI-based abuse cases.Highlighting the issue, Gambhir has said that his identity has been “weaponized” through anonymous accounts to spread misinformation and generate revenue, adding that the issue raises concerns beyond personal harm, including issues of dignity and legal protection in the context of artificial intelligence.The matter is expected to come up before the Delhi High Court for consideration of interim relief in the coming days.
