Alloway recently opened up about the inspiration behind the film, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he did a lot of research on female assassins and serial killers while working on the film. “Women do it for different reasons than men. Alloway and Houghton worked on the script together, and were on the same page about the story from the beginning. The director recalls asking the play’s author about making a slasher film and making people understand all aspects of a woman. “What if we use gender as a tool to help people understand how they feel, how violent and chaotic and messy and beautiful and joyful female relationships can be?” he remembered The director also described that he was grateful to find an actor who could respect the genre and take things seriously. He added about how certain scenes in the film completely defined the characters, “The confessions were at the heart of what the characters were. Lily and I, from the beginning, described the film as a razor blade in a Jolly Rancher.”
