About the controversy
The controversy started after Maharashtra Sikh president Gurjyot Singh Keer accused the film’s team, including director Aditya Dhar, Ranveer Singh and star Madhavan, of disrespecting Gurbani and hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community. The sequence in the film depicts Madhavan’s character Ajay Sanyal smoking a cigarette while reciting a sacred verse from the Dasam Granth Sahib – ‘Sura so Pehchaniye Jo lade Deen ke Heth’ – written by Guru Gobind Singh.“I strongly condemn the blatant disrespect shown to Gurbani by the makers of Dhurandhar 2. Gurbani is not mere conversation – it is divine, sacred and of immense spiritual importance to the Sikh community. Such disregard reflects ignorance and insensitivity towards our faith,” Keer said in a statement. He asked the entire Sikh community to stand united and peacefully protest against the depiction, and asked Dhar, Madhavan and Ranveer Singh to show black flags wherever they appear, unless they issue a sincere apology to the SGPC and the Sikh community.Recently, a photo of Ranveer smoking while wearing a turban also created a buzz online. However, it was later verified as an AI image.
