Darrell ‘Dash’ Crofts, the legendary voice of ‘Summer Breeze’ and one half of the beloved duo Seals & Crofts, has sadly passed away aged 87. His death, due to complications from heart surgery, occurred just one year after Jim Seals, his musical partner and soulmate.

The 70s yacht-rock duo were best known for their hit ‘Summer Breeze’. Jim Seals, another member of Seals & Crofts, died in June 2022 aged 79. A family member told TMZ that Crofts died of complications following heart surgery.

The producer of Seals & Crofts confirmed the news

News of the singer’s death was confirmed by Seals & Crofts producer Louie Shelton in a Facebook post on Thursday, March 26. “Sad to hear that our beloved brother and musical partner has passed away today,” the caption began. “Sending love and prayers to all his family and many fans. RIP my brother….. Dash Crofts.”

Dash Crofts and Jim Seals began their journey in high school

Born in Cisco, Texas, Crofts began playing the piano at age 5 before taking up drums by age 10. In high school, he played drums in a band, where he met Jim Seals, who was playing saxophone at the time. After high school, Crofts and Seals moved to Southern California and were members of ‘The Champs’ from 1958 to 1965. The duo began working together under the name Seals & Crofts in 1969 and in the 70s they had hits including ‘Summer Breeze’ and ‘Diamond Girl’.The group released more than a dozen albums, including 1972’s fourth album ‘Summer Breeze’ and 1975’s ‘Greatest Hits’. They also achieved four gold and two platinum records. During their career, Seals & Crofts earned two Grammy nominations for ‘Diamond Girl’ and ‘We Will Never Pass This Way (Again)’. In 1983, the pair went their separate ways before reuniting in the 1990s and in 2004 they reunited for their first album since 1980 with Traces. In 1998, Crofts released his first solo album, ‘Today’.
